NFL Week 9

Demanding that journalists fight you is always a sure sign that you haven’t done anything wrong.

Heh. Is it also an indication of perfectly-balanced, unmodified hormones?

Actually, the best place to have a heart attack is Seattle, where everyone who lives there is required to keep up their Resuscitation License (luckily, it only needs to be renewed every 8 years). Given the way Carroll has been coaching, they are not called the CPRHawks for nothing.

Here’s a couple of Raider fans showing LeSean what they think of the tempo.

Incognito, jeez what a perennial scumbag. He’s frequently gotton under Antonio Smith’s skin to the point of losing his temper and getting tossed. Dungy said in the draft they had him as DNDC, Do not draft because of character issues. It’s good to see this so out in the open now.

Texans sure threw away a fine first half performance last night. Damn that went south in an ugly way.

Kubes was lucky. Reliant is maybe a mile from the world class Texas Medical Center.

You have to wonder how much of that was the lack of Kubiak and Phillips getting distracted on defense with head coaching duties.

I’ve hated that guy for years, and I am in no way surprised that he’s an asshole to his teammates as well as to everyone else in the world. Fuck him.

I was watching with friends when Weeden was forced in. I said the exact same thing. The team must be just completely deflated when he comes in. It’s like the line doesn’t want to block for him.
Why don’t they pick up another QB?? (Or did they and I missed it?)

It’s amazing. The Browns are basically undefeated with non-Weeden starting QBs (the only loss that Weeden didn’t start was at Arrowhead.) Considering that Campbell and Hoyer are best described as “serviceable”, that roster must be quite good and Weeden must be the Black Hole of Suck.

I don’t think it affected Phillips that much; he’s been a head coach and defensive playcaller at the same time before. I do think it affected the offense, since Kubiak is the offensive coordinator. Considering how little experience Keenum has it would hardly be surprising if he lost the plot when a new guy was suddenly calling in the plays (and not on the field.) Kudos to the Texans (Wade and Duane Brown, anyway) for not using it as an excuse, though.

Didn’t they trade away a lot in order to climb high enough in the draft to pick Weeden? (Or am I thinking of someone else?) If so, I suppose they’re still trying to force some return on that investment.

Browns have a bye, then it’s @CIN, PIT, JAX. Is it just me, or could they win all those games?

The Packers, who suddenly have discovered that they have a running game, have had three different backs with 100+ yard games this season (Eddie Lacy, James Starks, and Johnathan Franklin). However, that’s been due as much to injuries as anything else – Starks got his 100-yarder when he stepped in for Lacy (who’d suffered a concussion), and then Franklin got his the following week, when Starks went down with a knee injury.

Now that everyone’s healthy, it looks like the Packers intend to ride Lacy as their lead back, with Starks spelling him, and Franklin getting only occasional attempts.

Also, Lacy came within 1 yard of being the second RB with back-to-back 100 yard games – he ran for 99 yards against Detroit, then for 120 yards against Baltimore the next week.

The CIN/CLE games are always tough, but after having lost to the Browns in CLeveland in the last one, and the Bengals being 4-0 at home so far this season, I think Cincinnati takes that one. Especially if they lose to the Ravens next Sunday.

It was a true pleasure to watch the Patriots trounce the Steelers. The Pats have got some lucky wins this season and have not played as good as their record would indicate, but they owned the Steelers in the second half and it was a thoroughly enjoyable beatdown. It was also great to see Gronkowski back and healthy - that guy is a beast and the Steelers had no answer.

Nobody’s losing to the Ravens these days. There were a lot of changes from the Super Bowl team to this one, but the o-line and backfield they put out there at the beginning of the year was pretty close to the playoff lineup. Somewhere between February and September, they completely forgot how to run the ball.

Playing the Bengals isn’t going to help that, Atkins or no Atkins.

I tend to agree, but it’s still very winnable. After CIN, PIT JAX, it’s NE, CHI followed by NYJ, PIT. The Browns could reach 9 wins.

I guess we’ll have a better idea after they play the Ravens, but no Atkins or Leon Hall? The offense better step up.

Aren’t they paying Joe Flacco some ridiculous amount of money, too?

I’m trying to forget that.

People keep pointing to Flacco like he’s the problem, but he’s never been a guy who can throw the ball like Manning or Brady. He throws a good deep ball when he’s got adequate protection, and he’s good in play action when the running game is working. But if he’s getting hit 10 times a game and the running backs are averaging less than 3 ypc, he’s not going to be very good. To be fair, though, nobody’s going to be very good in that situation.

As far as the contract goes, his cap space probably cost them Anquan Boldin, and that became more important when Pitta went down for the year. No doubt Flacco’s paycheck is out of proportion with his talent, but do you remember the string of QBs the Ravens fielded before him? Aside from McNair, they were awful, and McNair’s one full season wasn’t any great shakes. Flacco’s far and away the best QB in the franchise’s history.

Fans can talk themselves into anything, huh?

I’ve always thought Ozzie Newsome needed to hire a Director of Quarterback Personnel to protect him from himself. How can a guy be so good at cultivating talent at every other position and so bad at that one?

The really hard thing as a fan is that it shouldn’t be that hard to play QB there. Up until the last year or two, they were always a run-first offense with a good-to-great defense. An Alex Smith kind of guy should have fit great into that scheme, but the Ravens (Billick, really - I think Newsome turned over control of the position to him) kept asking their guys to do way more than they had to (and more than they could handle). Every time they’d start to get away from the run game, they’d lose a game or two and come back to it, without ever really learning anything.
