NHL - 2024 Regular Season

The lowly Canucks start off in fine, disappointing style, at home, opening game of the season, blowing multiple three-goal leads to lose to Calgary 5-4 in OT. Main goalie Thatcher Demko is still out indefinitely. The up and come’er back-up Kevin Lankinen has looked promising in the preseason game I saw.

Dallas is starting out well. Plus, they got rid of the dumbass “bing-bong” recording they played after every goal. I’m going to see them play Tuesday night. So, life is pretty sweet here.

Apropos of nothing, “Utah Hockey Club” is the most boring name for a hockey team, ever. Should have called them the Baby Blues or the Maroons or really anything else.

Wow. Thanks.

Blow me away with a puck, then.
I had absolutely no idea about this - another of Bettman’s fever dreams?
And yeah the name.
From wiki url:

Any of those names would’ve been better. Utah Shoehorns would’ve sounded better.
I’ll always be saying “Utah”, then. Sure as crap won’t go saying “yeah X team is playing the Hockey Club.”
Heh - currently, as of tonight, they’re leading the Western Conference with their whopping six points (3-0!) Yay?
Helps they have Clayton Keller - really nice to watch.

Yeah, at this early point they’re doing better than the Coyotes did in the last few seasons, at least.

And yeah, I’ll just call them “Utah” until they start calling themselves something more interesting. I really wish I could figure out how to get them called the Land Speed Records or something of that type.

Now that hockey season is upon us, this cartoon is probably fitting!

Yeah. This is the best time of year for sports. NFL getting going, CFL doing its playoffs, World Series baseball—who the hell cares about hockey? More than that, who cares about a league where over half the members make the playoffs anyway? Jeez, why bother playing the regular season? (Yeah, I know, it’s money.)

Who cares about hockey at this time of year, with so many other sports happening?
k
ETA: Can you tell that I’m a Canadian who hates hockey because it pre-empts so many other sports on our TVs?

“We’d like to bring you the Colorado - Nebraska football matchup, but we can’t since we’re contratcually obligated to bring you the Arizona -Tennessee hockey game.”

Who the @#$% in Canada cares about the Arizona - Tennessee game?

Well, I wouldn’t say “who cares” about a league like that, but I agree that the playoff formula in the NHL is ridiculous, compared, say, to MLB. In baseball, if you make the post-season it’s a cause for celebration. In the NHL, it’s just expected that you will, unless you really suck!

I do.

I understand that you also don’t like Caesars and prefer Bloody Marys. You’re a very fine fellow, but I’m beginning to have doubts about whether you’re really Canadian!

Okay, you made me laugh with that remark. Would you like to see my passport? My birth certificate? I can point out the house I grew up in, on the southwest of Yonge and Lawrence. My high school, Lawrence Park, just down the road from your Pusateri’s. My knowledge of how to make maple syrup? My love of the Leafs? (In spite of Harold Ballard.) All the times I was at Maple Leaf Gardens to cheer on the Leafs?

Aw, we can still get along, I’m sure. The Leafs suck, and they will always. Enough, said, and my best always,

ETA: No offense intended. Hey, if we ever meet, we can enjoy Bloody ___s! How about that?

Heh, cry me a river. I’m from Texas. In college they took money that paid for the art classes I was taking and spent it on the football team.

Mr Mould’s lawyers would like a word with you, please. :grinning:

:scream: :scream: :scream:

And yes, Ballard was in many ways a rather problematic individual. (“Women - only good for being kept barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.”) (well, pretty-well verbatim)
According to the Great One - HB’d turn off all the Maple Leaf Garden drinking fountains so more booze could be sold.
And speculation into his stable of catamites - yeah, that’s a whole other really freaking gross thing.

Seems like a classy guy.

I’m going to request that there IS NOT a new thread every month. Can we please keep all the NHL season talk in one, maybe two threads?

Anyways, last night not withstanding, I am waiting on the Oilers hitting the panic button.

I’m going to request the Mods to change this to NHL - 2024 Regular Season.

Having threads as separate months means you can’t easily refer back to an older post that is not in the same thread.

I’d oppose this. A monthly thread works well and it would be a pain to wade through a long thread a few months from now when the playoff race heats up.

Well to be fair and pedantic. It’s not more than half it’s exactly half. The NBA is the worst. 16 of 30 make the playoffs. 20 of 30 make it if you call the play-in games part of the playoffs.

Very poignant moment in Columbus as the Blue Jackets lined up without a left-winger in their home opener against the Panthers last night. The face-off was tapped to where Gaudreau would have been and the teams stood in silence for 13 seconds. RIP Johnny Hockey.

[Moderating]

I could do this, but I’d like to see a bit more consensus than this first. Any other opinions?

FWIW - not sure if it would be a fair trade-off to have threads in two-month clusters?

As long as there’s a separate thread for the post season, I think one thread for 2024-25 would be fine. The monthly threads are all pretty short, and having the whole season in one thread would make it more convenient to follow.

Let’s try monthly threads for Nov and Dec. We can revisit this in January and either go monthly or do a Jan-end of regular season and then a separate playoffs thread.

Reasonable compromise?

I think we need to hear from someone other than @dalej42 that thinks months are the way to go.

I don’t see any value in months whatsoever. Finding posts in separate threads isn’t fun.
