NHL - 2024 Regular Season

I did not have the Columbus Blue Jackets up 3-0 vs the Leafs halfway through the first period on my bingo card today.

Hey, I didn’t foresee Buffalo getting a 3-0 lead on the Stars. When the NHL is great, every game is an adventure.

Blue Jackets 2 Nashville 0. It’s a long season but the Predators look lost early this season as they try to move beyond being a defence first team.

I was just perusing the scores for tonight and the standings. Hey, they did pull it out in OT. But yeah, only being ahead of Chicago in the Central isn’t an auspicious start.

Edmonton, another western team that’s done well recently is also off to a less than great start. They’re currently only leading the win-less Sharks in the Pacific.

Conversely, the Utah Hockey Club is currently running .500, at least. As much as I dislike the name and the powder blue colors, they’re doing better than I expected.

But yeah, only 10% or so of the season gone. Still a lot of hockey left.

Oh dear.
That name again.

Man, if the Lions don’t win the Super Bowl, this will be painful. They just scored the most first half points for a Lions team since 1970(they scored 35) and are now up 49-14.

They are about to be 6-1.

Oh, that gridiron football stuff. Get thee to a nunnery!

Ha! I misread the title!

While I’ll be focusing on the World Series tonight, the Predators and Lightening play tonight as well. Nashville has been struggling as I guess they don’t realise they have men who can score goals on the team this year. This isn’t the old defence first, second and third Predators of the Trotz coaching era

Hoping the Preds aren’t pinning too much hopes on the veteran Stamkos. At least he’s gotten a good greeting with the new team, which he sure didn’t get from Barry “Yes I’m the Last Mullet Guy, like, Ever” Melrose, who showed almost zero faith in the obviously promising rookie back in '08.
There’s Marchessault, who came from the Knights, and of course Forsberg’s still kicking around, but I’ll hold out from according them what they’re offensively capable of, until, well, I see if they’ll produce, first.

Ovechkin scores #859. He’s playing like he wants to pass Wayne this year. He just might.

As Ovechkin gets closer to breaking this once-thought-untouchable record, is there room in this thread for some discussion that may veer into the political (but still within the context of hockey) with regards to his continued support of Putin, as well as the Capitals organization,Ted Leonsis and the NHL’s near-total silence on the matter?

Well, officially the NHL has condemned Russia’s war and cut ties with the KHL.

OTOH, I’m certain they are well aware the NHL has a contingent of Russian players, and fans, and were careful not to single out any players and expressed concern for their families back home. They will address Russia and the conflict as a whole, but not individual players. It’s a tightrope they seem to think they need to walk.

To that point -

Heh - didn’t think Ovi would catch Wayne’s record. As long as he puts in at least two more seasons I’l be surprised, now, if he doesn’t break it.

Wonder if Jonathan Marchessault is having second thoughts? He’s not playing well and the Predators have been the biggest disappointment in the NHL for the first month

Mods - if this is the wrong forum - feel free to relocate.

First, Bobby? Now Wayne?

I’m disheartened.

ETA:

Seems to be no preview page.

ETA II:

That seems to be a perfectly apropos egg-on-face picture of him.

The Athletic just posted their rankings.

May be paywalled

  1. Jets
  2. Hurricanes
  3. Panthers
  4. Stars
  5. Rangers

I haven’t seen enough of the Jets this year but they look like they’re on fire with great goaltending.

However, it is a nice contrast from ESPN and American based sports talk radio who seem to think they should just hand the Rangers the cup and be done with it.

Yeah, when Hellebuyck’s on, he’s on. Many seasons he’s put up great numbers, but, like Aaron Judge, in the play-offs, less than special, too much of the time.
Currently a whopping 10-1, 1.91 GA, and 932 SV%. Heh, even their back-up is 3-0.

The New York Islanders, after a very impressive beat down of the Canucks, absolutely lay an egg and lose to the Seattle Kraken today.

The Islanders are banged up, missing a lot of players, but this was such a winnable game.
Isles need to get healthy and quickly, good thing the Metropolitan is such a mess. So far, the Carolina Hurricanes are the only team that has impressed me in the Metropolitan.

I really hope that Chicago starts improving. Bedard has pretty much nothing to work with and unless the Hawks plan on losing him to free agency, they need to make some changes.

On the other hand, the Stars are doing well enough even with all the trouble of going to Finland to lose 2 games…
