NHL: October 2011

For those of you who have been to live games recently, how do you usually get tickets? I want to go the Stars/Coyotes games here in Phoenix on Nov. 26. I can get decently priced upper bowl seats either through the Coyotes season ticket resell or Stubhub, but lower bowl seats are still around $75 minimum. At other places, I’ve tried my luck with the scalpers, but going to the Coyotes arena is a serious drive for me, so I’m not sure that is the wisest idea for this game. If I don’t have scalper luck, I could end up paying full price at the arena box office as a walk up. I’m thinking of buying the upper bowl tix, then trying my luck with the scalpers, if something good comes up, then I’ll sell the upper bowl tix for a few bucks of beer money.

I don’t want announcers. No really, I’ve mentioned it before. I don’t want announcers.

When the game was on the radio, and Foster Hewitt gave the play-by-play it made sense.

When the game was on 14" grainy TV sets, it made sense.

I don’t have an HD receiver (yet) but I can fucking see everything, including players names and numbers. I don’t want an announcer yelling at me to describe what I’m already watching! I don’t need it. In adds nothing. It takes away from the game.

SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME JUST WATCH THE GAME!

I know who dumped it into the corner. I know who’s chasing it. I can see who’s passing it to whom.

SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME JUST WATCH THE GAME!

Honestly. Can you imagine watching a game on a large screen with only the crowd and the sounds from the ice? Luxury!

Actually, I hated it when CBC had that strike and showed CFL games without commentary. It was just eerie to listen to silence.

The real problem is that CBC has a collection of morons doing colour commentary. I nearly fell out of my chair last night when Greg Millen did a good piece of analysis and showed how Flip Kuba was wandering around the ice and basically not paying attention at all for a couple of plays.

Lower bowl…75$!!! Take it, take it now!!!

The disparity of ticket prices in this league is mind-boggling; lower bowl Habs tickets are in the $250-$400 range and completely out of our price range. Upper-bowl, nosebleed seats are about $60 before taxes and fees. We are going to see the Hamilton Bulldogs - yes, that’s an AHL team - at the Bell Centre and we will pay $48 a ticket for the lower bowl (the reds).

Are season tickets really only $255?!?!?!

You are either really, really lucky in Phoenix, or holy shit, you guys don’t deserve a fucking NHL team! I largely lean towards the latter, but damn.

I’m fairly sure that is the per game price.

Yeah it is…this is a bit easier to follow. $255 per ticket on a 21 game plan..

sigh of relief

That makes so much more sense! I figured I was missing something about that last night! Though I question the term “season tickets” to apply to 4 and 12 game purchases, those are actually some pretty nice deals. My friends and I were discussing the Yotes last night and generally agree that they are a pretty talented team that could go far with just a bit more money to spend on top players. At $255 for season tickets, I felt all their financial problems were suddenly explained!

Here is the section of the Coyotes website where you can buy tickets from season ticket holders that aren’t using them for a particular night. Some pretty good values.

Those are some nice looking sweaters for Tampa Bay. I just ordered a Winnipeg Jets sweater, but the new Tampa ones are next on my list.

Winnipeg wins their first game, a 2-1 decision that actually wasn’t as close as the score suggests.

I have to admit I… I don’t like Winnipeg’s logo. I get the tribute to the RCAF but it’s actually TOO MUCH like the RCAF. They don’t look like a professional hockey team; they look like a touring Air Force rep squad.

(And given that the jet is obviously supposed to remind you of a CF-18, are they going to change the logo when the RCAF switches to F-35?)

The Senators are down 4-0 after one period, outshot 10-3. And I thought it couldn’t get worse.

I remain absolutely amazed that Bryan Murray was given a contract extension. Murray has been one of the most spectacular failures in North American sports team management, and we’ve got him for three more years.

They’ll change the logo and sell a whole new set of jerseys to everybody who absolutely has to have the latest one?

Since they are the team with the smallest building in the league, they may have to switch uniforms every couple of years for the income…

WTF Habs?

Western Conference standings look like the good old days with Dallas, Colorado and Detroit at the top…

Fun game in Toronto tonight between the Jets and the Maple Leafs. Joffrey Lupul of the Leafs scores a goal and breaks the goal cam with the shot. I love the enthusiasm of this crowd and I see a few Jets fan in the Air Canada Centre.

Kris Letang has been Shanabanned. I can understand the reasons, although I think calling him a “repeat offender”, as Shanahan did last night when he made his public statement was bullshit.

He has a previous disciplinary action against him for a similar play, doesn’t he? That’s pretty much the definition of repeat offender, though it doesn’t put him into Matt Cooke territory (the uniform does that… :P). I’m glad it’s only 2 games; having him out is hurting my fantasy team!

DGB: Shanabanned

Against all odds, Hal Gill will play his 1000th game tomorrow. Yes, you read that right. Hal Gill.

How bad are the Senators? They’ve averaged five goals against per game. Detroit has only allowed five goals period.

(Ironically, three of those goals were scored by Ottawa.)

No offense, but get over it. Unless you are willing to put up with endless cheapshots in the NHL, let Shanahan do his thing. There are going to be some growing pains, but I think you know that what he is doing is for the betterment of the game.

Huh? I didn’t say I disagreed with the decision, just that I personally wouldn’t call Letang a “repeat offender”. (And no, he’s nowhere near Cookie!)

Jesus.
