NHL/Olympic Hockey: February 2010

I don’t think that you’re going to get much of a rise out of Canadians by making fun of the Canadian Budweiser.

Give’em a break. They just lost a heartbreaker in overtime.

See my post 206.

Sweet. Best. Game. Ever!

Well…
Congrats Canada, that was a great tournament for ya.

All in all that was a great game, that 28.7 seconds to go goal probably made me happier than the average Canadianer is at getting the gold. Ryan Miller did more than anyone would expect from anyone. Suffering through that interview with decorum when it was obvious he really wants to go punch a brick wall took major self control.
No shame at all for the U.S. guys but they didn’t quite pull off the win. Grats again to Canada.*

[sub]* Wait till next olympiad :)*[/sub]
But all in all it showed how the NHL is still The Hockey league. I had seriously overestimated the Russians having bought into the propaganda that the KHL is almost as good.

Well, they did just lose a game.

No shame in Silver, though. We weren’t expected to get that far!

And CTV are being gracious to the Americans.

Little squib on the TV coverage just now–downtown Yonge Street in Toronto has been closed. The crowds are swarming in the area around Dundas Square; there is no way any traffic could get through anyway.

ETA: I guess the Dundas streetcars are backing up…

I seem to say “all in all” a lot when I’m drunk. gotta keep an eye on that.

My namesake won a gold medal today. Bravo, Sid.

Team USA - what a strong performance throughout the games. I’m so proud.

Congratulations to Canada. If we’re going to lose, you’re the only country we’d want to lose to. In a weird way, it kind of makes me feel good to know that Canada is still the gold standard for the sport. The happiness of the players and crowd during “Oh, Canada” was moving even to this American.

Oh, and not to rip too much on Ryan Miller, but what was up with that helmet. And eagle and an Uncle Sam? A little over the top, isn’t it? It looked like something you see on the Stephen Colbert show.

The thing is, they just lost a game. They’re professional athletes, and so are almost, to a man, incredibly driven by competition and status. If you aren’t ridiculously competitive you wouldn’t be there. Such people will always be angry and pissed and disappointed after losing a game.

In time they’ll be happy to have won silver, but you can’t ask a top flight athlete to be happy immediately after a hearbreaking defeat.

I thought Crosby played an outstanding tournament even when he wasn’t scoring; he was making things happen all the time, the puck just wasn’t going in for him.

By comparison, I was remarkably underwhelmed by the Shark Line, who were dominant when facing crappy opposition and never seemed effective, especially in the defensive zone, against good teams. The announcers got boners every time they hit the ice, but the performance was not there.

Marleau and Heatley were ok. They at least were driving the net and picking up the garbage. Thornton never got anywhere near the net and that’s why his linemates outscored him so badly.

I weep for the shoddy educational system our youth are exposed to. Kids today don’t know the fundamentals.

I found this at a… ahem very Conservative board I lurk in:

Not trying to.

Well, just got back from a Gold Medal party and am checking in. Good God, I knew I should have taken my nitroglycerin tablets with me!

I swear I absolutely knew the US was going to tie it up when they pulled Miller. I even said so to the people at the party. Then, I also said the US had the momentum and was going to win. Great effort by Crosby. If I could have kissed him, I would have.

Well done lads.

We went out for a walk and there were cars honking and people yelling everywhere.

I was down at Yonge and Dundas. What a party. So many flags, so many hugs, so many high-fives.

A road hockey game has broken just to the south at Yonge and Shuter. There was a consistent stream of people starting to sing O Canada every few minutes.

The best part? Everyone waited on the four corners until the police cleared traffic and then once it was alright, a loud cheer went up and the party began. Amazing.

Well that could be anything. Given the broccoli bouquets they gave the winners someone might have spotted an actual flower. Maybe a glacier receded enough that a parking space opened up.

It’s a country that gets excited watching people on TV polishing ice with a broom. You never know.

18 seconds in…you plagiarist!
:stuck_out_tongue:

With all this excitement, maybe Canada will be able to support a seventh NHL team!
