NHL season begins Jan 13 with new divisions

Slate rips into the NHL.

The league gave in to one of the worst parts of hockey culture, turned its nose up at a problem it could’ve easily solved, and allowed an overheated situation to burn into an embarrassment for the entire NHL.

And as for the completely coincidental firing…

The Rangers apparently let it leak that their firings were unrelated to the statement and instead due to the team underachieving, which I find to be one of the single least believable bits of crisis management anyone has ever attempted in all of sports.

Matt Cooke, of all people, has added his two cents. And when Matt Cooke says you’ve gone too far, well, you might want to sit up and take notice.

(Article might be behind a paywall. It was for me earlier, but it’s working now.)

Not a surprise, but Tortorella is out in Columbus. He definitely wears out his welcome, but I think the Jackets have definitely been better under him. I assume there’s no way Seattle has an interest.

I think the rumor is that they distanced themselves from Dolan’s ridiculous statement.

They’ve packed the Rangers with talent and they get let go, but the junior hockey coach who couldn’t keep all that talent moving in the same direction keeps his job. Well, as an Isles fan, I’m not crying.

I keep looking for the playoff schedule, but I only see Game 1 of the Bruins/Caps series, and literally nothing else. Is there nothing else scheduled yet?

Great oogly-boogly!
Now the Rangers have gotten rid of their coach and three assistant coaches.
Trainer’s next? Stickboy?
:smirk:Hey at least they’re still clinging on to the goalie coach and skills coach.

I keep looking too - nada for any of the other divisions so far. I understand that for the North division, since they aren’t done with regular play yet, but dunno what’s going on with the other two.

That makes more sense than getting rid of their GM. That team is packed with talent.

Perhaps the Rangers ownership is channeling their inner Steinbrenner?

I demand a championship season in a New York minute or else you’ll be thrown out the door in the next New York minute!!!1!."

Full disclosure: I know exactly zero about the Rangers’ ownership.

James Dolan. I think Rangers fans can’t stand him. The rest of the division probably appreciates his ability to screw up a team with so much talent.

Islanders/Penguins series starts Sunday at noon. I assume the rest of the series are also scheduled.

@Guinastasia, may the best team win!

They are!

Bad news for my Wild team: 1st round match-up against Vegas, the team most of the sports media gives the #1 power rank spot to going into the playoffs.

Good news for my Wild team: They’ve beat the Knights 5 out of 8 times this season.

Don’t worry, we will!!! :penguin:

Nifty stat. Have you seen the bulk of those tilts? Lifetime they’re 5-10-1 against Minnesota, their third most daunting foe. They seemed to have gotten into Fleury’s head? He’s always had this thing with giving up rebounds. Stellar numbers this season, though, and the Knights are a shot-blocking team. And sure - Lehner’s as good a back-up as you’ll get. Actually I can’t think of a better tandem, other than maybe Montreal’s (if the latter wasn’t so putzy right now).
Will follow this series closely, heh, especially now that neither the Canucks nor the Flyers are in .
Yeah but if the WIld do it - that will really cement their mark on a team that I’d otherwisae would have put money on to take the Cup.

In this bizarro covid season, it still fucks my mind absolutely George Clinton style how the Canucks play tonight, with four more games to go in the schedule, while game one of the play-offs also start tonight in Washington.

These play-offs have been so good

Rapt audience: “How good have they been?”

Well! It took the third period of the sixth game of the play-offs for ANY team to get a two-goal lead.

Great views of a full (masked!) barn in Carolina. Happier times.

How they hell did Pageau NOT get a penalty for that hit on Dumoulin? Didn’t that count as boarding?

Thank the hockey gods Dumo was okay – he’s just coming off IR!

I think it’s because he was already falling down.

Scoring ace Auston Matthews (urg I hate the spelling of both those names) has become the first US-born player to win the Rocket Richard Trophy.
And lose the moustache.
