night sweats

when detoxing–either from alcohol or drugs–, or because of illness, why do we only sweat at night and only while lying down?

In general, your temperature gets higher later in the day, even if you are well.
circadian rhythm, and i think light/dark cycles influence it some how

If you are up moving and active, your body thermostat actually goes down, because you are generating excess heat via other means.

When you are sick, your temp seems to get notched up all together.

I sweat out booze all day after a long night of drinkin. You might just notice it more when lying in bed.

One theory I’ve heard is that drugs or detox can mess with the parts of your brain that regulate body temp, which causes night sweats. I have no scientific evidence to back that up though.
