I see. And what’s your stance on people who do believe those things happened?
I believe some of the more raging loons, like those who think the fire department was in on it, are insane, just like I’d believe someone who insisted encyclopedia in hand that no, Dallas is the capital of Texas, would be. But someone calmly and quietly stating they do not believe every single aspect of the US’ official version of the events, I don’t have a problem with, same as I don’t have a problem with someone who doesn’t think Oswald acted alone. Someone who thinks JFK’s wife was in on it though, is a loon, but not a bitch, or a piece of shit, which was my main problem with the thread. A weird take on a subject, as long as you personally are not harming anyone with your thoughts, is not worthy of such vitriole, previous reasons given duly noted.
I mean the US at the minimun per their own admission that “something” was going down, and did nothing- no extra airport security, nothing, so they in effect “allowed” it to happen, whehter out of ignorance, apathy, or something more sinister.
If raging bigots (who are notoriously not open to reason or willing to change their beliefs one iota) realize that there is a serious social and economic cost to their spittle-flecked proselytizing, then yes, there’s a good chance they won’t feel so free to spread their venom in public.
If they want to meet in basements and read Mein Kampf to each other (or partake of sundry other private activities), who cares.
Given the choice of[ul][]Ignorance[]ApathySomething sinister[/ul]which do you think most likely, and why?

I don’t know, because I don’t know exactly what the US knew and when they knew it- was it vague chatter that something was going to happen soon, or was it that a hijacking on US soil was imminent? Now if you tell me for certain that they knew a US hijacking was planned and imminent and they didn’t even bother to strengthen airport security, then I’d question that. Of course, it will probably never be known who knew exactly what, exactly when.
If I was certain they only had vague chatter that OBL was planning something big on US soil, I’d say a bit of arrogance/ignorance on the US’ part, that they did not think he could pull of something so massive in the US.
Okay, and what’s your stance on people who claim they do know the correct answer is “something sinister”?
Maybe the have more info, maybe they’re daft, maybe they just feel that way, it depends on the person and the reason.
I’m not arguing the merits of her position though. I think putting the 9/11 conspiracy stuff anywhere but the loony shelf is silly.
I’m just trying to point out that the really dick stuff attributed to her - dismissing the deaths that did happen at the Pentagon - isn’t really fair.
I don’t think so, but that’s how I read her first two (three?) posts. To me it was pretty clear that when she said the lack of damage was “convenient” and so on, she was speaking from the POV of potential (American) conspirators.
What if they claim to be basing their belief on info that is, on examination, spurious?
Then maybe they’re the biggest idiot on the planet, so title the pit thread “X is the biggest idiot on the planet”, not a piece of shit, and most would be ok with it.
I’m not sure why one form of insulting hyperbole is acceptable and the other is not, but okay…
Come on now- if you know someone who firmly believed 2 plus 2 is 5, you’d think of them as stupid, ignorant, whatever- would thinking of them as a piece of shit, or filth, or a bitch, ever enter your mind? Its just so over top and not the reaction of a normal person to the specific situation, do you not agree? I’m not even talking about the language, I curse more than anyone, but the punishment doesn’t fit the crime, if you will.
“Two plus two is … five?”
“YOU FUCKING NAZI!”
It would be like I’m telling people two weeks ago that Coppin State is going to win the NCAA tournament, and is going to win every game by twenty points- a pit thread calling me stupid is fine- could you imagine one saying you goddamn stupid fucking cocksucker son of a whore, etc?
Well, one is at least based in reality, and one is not.
Personally, I’d rather be seen as a jerk than an imbecile, but that might just reflect the fact that I’m a jerk, and not (always) an imbecile.
Well, yes, but only because you’re a stupid fucking cocksucker son of a whore, not because of that Coppin State thing.
No, I don’t agree since it’s quite natural to attribute someone’s willful ignorance to their personal maliciousness. There exists quite a distinction between thinking there might be unexamined or underreported aspects of the WTC attack and gleefully promoting theories that Group A was involved not because of any particular evidence, but because the speaker irrationally and determinedly believes that Group A is evil.
NightRabbit may or may not be for the former. The links he/she provided are clearly the latter. When their lack of substance is pointed out, NightRabbit’s reponse is to bolt. If there’s a problem I have with the level of scorn in this thread’s title, it’s that the target is unworthy, not undeserving.
And calling someone “the biggest idiot on the planet” (as you imply would be okay) is not “over the top” ?
A bit, but its commonly done and viewed as an acceptable way to get your point across in such situations as you know- someone says something dumb, you call them dumb or an intelligence related insult, not a bitch or piece of shit.
Maybe, if it was a one-shot. The repetition (indeed, the stubborness) is what I suspect was the deciding factor. It is not unreasonable for that to have changed the perception from it being a problem of intelligence to being a problem of character.
Are you aware of the memo that contains a summary of warnings the US received in the months prior to 9/11 regarding a pending attack? It mentions the possibility of planes being used as missiles, Federal buildings, icons, and an unnamed location in America’s heartland. No specific target nor timeframe.
