if the flatish part of the nipple is called the areola, what is the name for the little bump in the middle of a nipple?
i looked on google, and while i did find some very interesting nipple-related sites, i could not find one that had a nipple-anatomy chart.
thank you,

Gee, I’m really shocked that you couldn’t find plenty of information about nipples by doing a Google search…
Turning to the entry in Gray’s Anatomy on “The Mammæ”, we find that the technical name for the nipple is the “Mammary Papilla”.
I think I must be the most deficient google-user on the web. All I turned up was sites on tripple nipples, and ones where people liked grafting nipples to people’s posterior cheeks.
Thank you MEBuckner, for your sites.
Does anyone know if there is a nickname for the “Mammary Papilla”? Hooter is to breast as _______ is to Mammary Papilla?
Also, does a nipple count as an appendage? If not, what exactly would it be counted as.

According to the anatomy book I happen to have laying around, the bump in the middle is the nipple. The nipple is surrounded by the areola. Although I believe differently, it describes the areola as not part of the nipple. The book’s from 1959, so it’s possible there have been great advances in the field of nippular taxonomy.
Well, I was kidding about the Google search. I mean, you’ll sure get a lot of hits doing searches on “nipple” or “nipples”, but it’s definitely a case of “TMI” in a slightly different use of the phrase.
However, I happen to have that site (www.bartleby.com) with Gray’s Anatomy bookmarked. It’s a very good site; I highly recommend it.
That phrase could be incorporated into a great sig.
Hell, it could be incorporated into a great way of life.
A friend from college called them “artesians”, (he was specifically excluding the areola - I asked). I think he came up with that himself, but it’s a nice name, and I’ve always thought of them as artesians since. I humbly submit this in case you can’t find anything better.
