NJ liscences and insurance question

Here’s the deal: I want to get my permit and then liscence soon. My mom says that I can’t get my permit until I have enough money to pay for the insurance myself. Do I really need to pay for the insurance if all I have is my permit? I thought that you only needed insurance if you had a liscence. I want to get the permit soon so I don’t have to wait a really long time before I can get the liscence. Also, any idea how much insurance would cost for a guy in NJ?

Thanks for the help in advance.

While I believe you aren’t required to have insurance while you have a permit (and are driving with a parent in their car), you do need to inform the insurance company (and if you wreck the car you parents insurance goes up). As far as insurance costs in New Jersey, think big- New Jersey has the highest insurance costs of any state. It varies with the area- the cost is highest in the Newark area and lower in the less populated areas near parts of the PA border. You will probably have to be on your parents policy. If you want to get your own car when you get your license and have any chance of affording the insurance on your own, think beater car with no collision and state minimum coverage. I don’t know how much your insurance would cost, and its going to depend on your parents records as well, but as a comparison, my insurance runs $3400 a year at 22 yrs old for a vehicle thats currently worth probably 20k.
