No cheerleading?

Giraffe’s post in the pit:

Really? I honestly didn’t know.

Yeah, it was a Pit sticky for a few years, after every Pit thread had a bunch of jokey lawn chair posts. Since it hasn’t come up for a long time, we didn’t bother putting it in the forum rules. If it starts happening more often, we can always put it back in there.

Thanks. I don’t do it (or like it), just didn’t know it was a rule. Ignorance fought!

I’m done here.

You know, there was a time when we didn’t have a lot of rules or worried about post counts in threads, etc. <sigh>

The cheerleading rule has nothing to do with post counts. It’s discouraged because it’s childish and because it’s filler, as Giraffe said.

There was a time people didn’t split hairs or argue endlessly over nitpicks either.

(It was around the time that dinosaurs roamed the earth and god was in the third grade. Dirt was brand new.)

I’ll accept it is rather tired, and a bit lazy, but childish seems a bit strong! After Guinastasia accusing me of being a 14 yr old, I could develop a complex if this continues!

I’m standing by that one. It evokes the image of kids standing in a circle in the schoolyard during recess, chanting “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

I’m sorry but I’m having trouble believing this.

I didn’t shout “Fight! Fight! Fight!”… I used to shove them in the back if they were showing hesitancy! I see what you mean though.

And that’s different from the rest of the Pit because…?

[emphasis added]

Filler, as in posts that are unnecessary, as in too many posts.

That particular rule has been around a pretty long time: since 2002, to be exact.

Yeah, it’s too bad. We started with the simple “don’t be a jerk” rule, and we thought that was sufficient. But people tend to push the limits, to put one toe over a fuzzy line, and to annoy others. Almost all of our later rules arose because there was sufficient abuse that most other posters were annoyed. (Yeah, a few later rules arose for other reasons, such as the READER’s anxieties about potential legal issues.)

I’m with you in sighing about this. If all our posters behaved politely and in a reasonable mature way, we wouldn’t need all these rules. Moderator life would certainly be easier, too.
