Me four, except change 20 to about 16.
I have really nice red hair that I never thought about changing because it’s just me. It’s an identity thing. Then found LUSH brand Arabian Brights deep conditioning henna. I use it weekly now (until I run out and have to beg someone to send me some) and I love the way it has gradually added some brightness and gently tinted the incoming grey.
Otherwise I plan to let the white/grey come on through. I’m getting very close to 50 so I figure I deserve my badge of maturity. Haaa haaa haaaa!!
(That’ll be the day!!)
I noticed my first grey hair at 18. I stopped plucking them after I got married two years later. I still haven’t noticed enough to call a streak, but I do have many more grey hairs than I used to. I don’t care if they make me look old.
That is your choice.
However, chosing a different path than you, is not maddness.
Two things:
I always wanted red hair, my whole life. So in my mid-20’s, I dyed it a deep aubrun/brown. It looked very nice, and it was fun - it grew out completely after some time, but I loved it while I had it.
I don’t ever plan to dye it again. That doesn’t mean I may change my mind in the future. I started a thread sometime ago, about how I was getting more and more grey hairs. The response was so positive - especially about the soft grey streak I will apparently be getting in my bangs (it’s only 3 hairs now, but they are obvious), that I started looking at it a different way, and actually started liking it. So for now, at least, I have no intentions.
I’ve never dyed my hair thus far (I’m 26), and don’t plan to until it starts going grey. See, I’m a redhead, and I looooove being a redhead, and I plan to be a redhead, come hell or high water, until the day I die. It’s not that I dislike grey hair; it’s that so much of my identity has always come from the color of my hair. That, and I like the idea of being the slightly eccentric 85-year-old who still has bright red hair.
(There’s one at my church, and I think she’s great.)
So, until that time, I am adamant about no dye touching my hair; it’s an unusual shade of red, and I love it just the way it is.
It may seem mousy, it may seem dull,
But you can see how silky it feels,
And I’m keeping it brown after all that I’ve done
You would believe me
If you could see this old girl that you know
With hair just like Bozo the Clown,
All orange and fried like an egg.
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn’t stay all my life a brunette
Trying out L’Oreal, 'cause I’m worth it, you know
Then I chose salons.
Running around, trying Frederic Fekkai
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
No dye for me, Argentina
The truth is my color’s stubborn.
All through my blonde days
My red-head weekends
I looked like crap, so,
I never dye now.
If I use that stuff on my brown hair, would it get a reddish tint?
Friends of mine have had good results with henna. The result is more subtle with very dark hair, but it can really pick up mousy colors. IIRC it made their hari feel nicer, unlike most colorants.
I was in the Never Dye Camp too. My natural hair color was the most gorgeous brown with beautiful gold and copper highlights. Then I turned 30 and the gray hair popped up over night. I have a white streak at one temple and gray hair popping up elsewhere on my head. I now dye occasionally but it’s a halfhearted effort. I’ll never get my pretty natural hair color back without spending hundreds of dollars a month. So I dump on a bottle of medium brown, sigh in the mirror, and wish my damn hair would just go ahead and turn white and get it over with.
I’m 43 and have never dyed my hair. I just got my first few grey hairs this year (4 of them) and I like them so much I’ll show them to anyone who seems like they would be interested (and that’s not many- ).
I’m too low maintenance to dye my hair, put on makeup, or wear anything other than comfy clothes and shoes. This year, I threw away my one lipstick because I hadn’t used it in so many years that it became all dried up. On the rare occasions I did use the lipstick, I also used a tiny bit of it for eye shadow, too. I think you can tell by that sentence how much attention to fashion detail I have!
I’ve never done it. My hair is black, and I like the color. Any lighter color would look stupid on me, I think. Also, my hair is very short, meaning I’d probably get dye all over my scalp.
I haven’t nor do I intend to. My complete line of thoughts on me ever dyeing my hair follows: " I’m a redhead. Why would I feel compelled to dye it a *less * distinctive color?" If I ever have to go into the witness protection program, I might consider it, but other than that…
Eve is my heroine. brings offerings to the beautous and wonderful Eve
I used to belong here, but then I lightened my hair with red / gold highlights… :o
I’ve never dyed my hair either. It’s almost black and I have silver patches above my temples plus silgle silver hairs here and there. The patches aren’t really noticeable because my other hair tends to mostly cover it but I wish it was. I love my silver hair and wish it would come in a bit faster than it is.
Hi, Monica! In theory, yes. The packaging says it will add ‘sunset’ reddish highlights. I like it for the conditioning as well. I have red hair so I am not in as much danger of a Haircolor Disaster as some might be so I plop this weird mud on my hair and wrap it in plastic wrap for an hour or two (the package says 20 mins.). Check the Lush.com website.
Good luck!
My hair’s just too damn long for the bother. Anything temporary would take probably two full packages of dye (and not last too long, so just as I was getting used to it it’d be gone), and permanent? With my hair, that’s like a tattoo on my scalp. I’d have to chop my hair off to get rid of it.
If I ever end up chopping off my hair, maybe. I still doubt it, though.
I’m not going to say never, because I’m only 31 and I don’t currently have any grays (at least that I can see - I suspect there might be a few in there lurking). But I’d like to think that I’m just not going to care and will go with the flow.
The reason I hope that is because I’m the type of person that wears no makeup, doesn’t spend a lot of time styling my hair, and gets a haircut about twice a year. I can’t see spending the time (and the money - I’m CHEAP) futzing with my haircolor.
But who knows?
I saw my first gray hair at age 16. My dad was completely gray by the time he was 27 so I wasn’t too surprised.
For a while it was kind of cool to be 21 and have a solid white stripe then when I hit 30 or so I decided to dye my hair it’s original color, very dark brown. I soon found that silver roots on dark brown hair look worse so now I put a rinse on once a month or so to at least give it some color instead of snow white.
This pic was taken last week and you can see I’m probably 75% gray now. What can I do? At least it’s healthy.
I don’t dye because it makes me, well…die.
Tried to dye my hair auburn once, just for fun. Unfortunately, at the time I didn’t have the sense to do a patch test. Within hours I had a horrible rash all the way around my neck, on my chest, and on my upper shoulders.
I applied some topical Benadryl cream thinking that would clear it up. WRONG! Turns out I was also allergic to that , and soon my eyes and throat were swelling shut, I was short of breath, and the rash was now down to the tops of my thighs…front and back
Cost me a trip to the ER and a week of Cortisone therapy. Yuck.
Luckily, my natural color is reddish blonde and is fine on it’s own. I have found one brand of temporary color I can usse to punch up the red tones when I get the urge. But no more permanent dyes for me, thanks.
