In case you missed it the Latin Grammys were on last night on CBS. Unlike previous LG shows this one seemed geared to highlighting the pop side of Latin music. Aside from a couple of performances of traditional Mexican music and an opening number that managed to butcher several Celia Cruz’s songs, color me unimpressed, every other performance seemed like a Spanish version of American pop sounds from a couple of years ago. Even Ricky Martin traded in his hip swiveling music for a ballad which left me somewhat confused since I couldn’t decide whether it was about a love left behind or about a little kid.
There were a couple of outstanding performances, one by Spaniard David Bisbal, who rocked the house as this year’s version of Ricky Martin, with a distinctly Spanish, not Latin sound. If he plays his cards right and manages to stay out of the clutches of Emilio Estefan he could be a huge star. Another nice number early in the show featured a duet by Kelly Clarkson and Brazilian Alexandre Pires, did you notice Pires’ outfit? Brazil is going through an Urban Cowboy phase right now. The closing number could’ve been a nice one, it was performance by Brazilian group Tribalistas, which unlike most of the other pop Latin songs performed at the show actually was different from American pop, but alas the producers decided to roll the credits and read the Latin Grammy rules over the performance.
Hey, What was the name of the band who performed “con mi primer million?” they seemed cool and I can’t remember their name.
And could Thalia BE more of a prefab failure?
And the guy who gyrated his hips like the male Shakira, (the one that came on the slide) is he colombian? My wife had to mute the tv during his performance cause she was on the phone.
“Mi Primer Millon” is by Bacilos, a Miami band. Their sound, specially that song, is a combination of Miami and Colombian sounds, kinda like a Cumbia/Vallenato/Charanga sound.
I second the Thalia sentiment.
The guy on the slide was David Bisbal, the guy I call this year’s Ricky Martin, nice song and nice show.
How can Thalia be “prefab” if she’s already been successful? She’s had two super successful albums (En Extasis and Amor a la Mexicana). I agree that her new stuff seems bland and I can’t believe she married Tommy Mattola, but let’s not revise history.
You’re right about her previous career, but she’s not the same Thalia. She’s been turned into an amalgam of Mariah Carey-Janet Jackson-Jennifer Lopez, and a few others.
Her current husband is Mottola, of Sony. Mariah’s ex.
I didn’t watch it all, since I didn’t know at what hour it was on, so I decided I wouldn’t watch half of it. I did watch Los Juanes show, until the Black Eye Peas started singing. Oh, and I liked how they didn’t bleep out the Spanish swearings that the presenter said.
Thalia, like Shakira before her, was always gorgeous, and a decent singer before they tried to turn her into a post-J.Lo pop diva.
I live in Miami, and had no idea the Latin Grammys were last night. I like some Mexican music, but not most of the poppy stuff that gets the spotlight these days.
