No lie is too stupid or outrageous (Trump on abortion)

New Biden ad: “My name is Joseph R. Biden, and I hate babies!

Perhaps he is stupid enough to believe that the fetus is removed and then killed.
That’s my major problem understanding Trump. Is he stupid or lying?

It can be both things.

As I see it he just says the first thing that pops into his mind without evaluating it and without regard for ideology or consistency with what he said last week, yesterday, or the previous sentence.

His strategy, insofar as it is one, is plainly to appeal to the craziest of the crazy MAGA base, assuring himself that he will draw at least 30% of the overall vote, and possibly a bit more. This 30% + will work out to over 50% in certain states, and he can then claim fraud in a few other states where he draws in the 40% + range.

That is his goal. He’s given up entirely on winning the popular vote, and even on winning the electoral vote. All he wants is the crazies to vote, so he can claim victory.

If he gets very very very lucky, as he did in 2016, he could pull off an actual victory but that was a hundred-to-one shot then, and now it’s more like a 500-to-1 shot. He just wants the lunatic vote, which so far is solid behind him, whatever nonsense he spouts.

There are folks other than Trump who think that murdering babies is an actual position for some folks on the left. Even people like our friend Sam S here on these very boards:

So if the issue is framed as “Should abortion be legal or not?” Democrats win. But if the issue comes down to third trimester abortion or partial-birth abortion (or among the most radical, abortion up to 24 hours after birth), the Republicans could easily win the issue.

(bolding mine). Nice that he acknowledges that it’s the “most radical” anyway.

I’m sure I could find some lunatic on the right wing who advocates putting immigrants into death camps, but I would not call that an actual position (even a radial one) of the right wing.

I’m of the opinion that some on the right are trying to MAKE the issue not one of “should abortion be legal or not”, because they will lose on this, but rather they are actively trying to bullshit and lie, and make the issue about “killing babies after they are born”

This is what Trump is doing - lying and trying to shift the argument. And folks will suck that up and repeat it - even here on the SDMB.

Honestly, I ask myself this about run of the mill anti-abortion folks who declare that abortion is murder. Forget Trump’s idiocy, they’ve been calling it murder for decades.

The government sanctions the murder of a million helpless babies a year yet I’ll wrap myself in the flag and declare that same nation the most wonderful thing that ever existed. Makes you wonder what the government and people would have to do to make them say “I’m not proud of my country.”

Of course, the Right is fine with letting them get murdered once they’re school age.

One of the oddest things I heard about abortion was a preacher saying that Democrats were the reason for the baby-formula shortage a while ago - because since the D’s couldn’t kill the baby before birth, they had to resort to killing after birth - hence the mysterious shortage of formula.

Retroactive abortion. Should be done on a few I could name.

@slicedalone: great post overall. But I’ll quibble a bit with this:

The country in 2016 was in many ways far less looney than it is now. Yes, more poeple know what Trump actually would do as Prez in 2024 than knew that in 2016. At the same time, far more people are also totally on board with wanting that stuff to happen.

I’m having a real hard time saying with any confidence that the “Never Trump” camp has grown more or faster than the “Always Trump” camp. I also think the latter camp has a lot more room to be inflated in both number and enthusiasm over the next ~18 months. While the former camp is just fatigued with the whole issue and getting ever more so.

We shall see.

Which episode is this?

S8E25: The Secret War of Lisa Simpson

Thanks, it’s coming back to me now.

Do you?

Usually.

I’d like to believe that, but I think that Trump just brought the existing looniness to the fore. As a straight, white male living in the liberal northeast, I didn’t think racism and intolerance was as bad as it was – the intolerant racists were much more quiet. Trump allowed them to come out of the woodwork.

(I mention my identity because I’m sure that minorities and LGBTQ folks knew just how racist and intolerant this country was all along, but I was pretty blind to it)

“I’m Joseph R. Biden, and I promise to outlaw killing babies after they’re born!”

Not really, Trump isn’t breaking any new ground here. This claim that botched abortions would result in the birth of a healthy viable baby which the abortionist would then kill has been an urban legend passed around the anti-abortion crowd for years.

IN the early 2000’s it was “partial birth abortion”, then in 2012 there was a stupid theoretical paper written by some pro-choice ethicists and used by the anti abortion movement to as an example what the typical pro-choicer things. More recently there were the misinterpretations of laws in New York and California, and the reaction with the “born alive bill”.

So, far from being as a radical statement that no sane politician would make, its just boiler plate GOP rhetoric.

Yeah, but coming from an actual former president and current candidate is crazy. And his enablers just ho-hum it. Like his Freedom Cities. He’s never asked to elaborate on anything he says.
