No Man's Sky - First star to the right, and straight on till morning

There is some trick to getting the one you want. Something about saving with a beacon then reloading and it resets or something. I haven’t tried it. I’ve been just kind of playing the game and not really going for the best. I have a dumpy S-class fighter and a really good S-class explorer that are my main ships. Then I got 2 of the exotic class explorers but they actually suck, slots wise, so I only keep them around because they look so cool. I want to upgrade my hauler to an S-class if I can find a cool one, then upgrade my fighter to something that looks better (I think there is a exotic class fighter so that would be good, as long as it’s at least as good fighting wise as my current one), and finally an S-class capital ship and multi-tool.

There was a 48 slot S-class hauler sitting in a station when I pulled in. Excited, I went to buy it. With the exchange of my current 47 slot class B hauler, it would have been 63 million. I had 61 million on me. Selling my entire inventory got me to 62.

Dammit. I’m probably never going to see that thing ever again.

There is, however, something very freeing about selling your whole inventory. I may have to do that more often.

I kinda wish there was a way to trade off money for the tedium in going system to system checking for high-class items/ships. I have $1.5B that I don’t know that to do with–it would be cool if I could hire someone to go out searching for S-type craft, or maybe have some freighter expeditions that would find them. Sure, crank up the price but at least make it an option.

I think I have played through the game’s depth at the current point. It is a game of more breadth than depth, lots of types of things to do, but none of the things are all that deep. No complaints from me, worth every penny I spent and more, but I have a pretty good idea why the early buyers were pissed. An a a less deep level, with bugs blocking a lot of things a lot of the time would have been annoying as hell.
My assumption is that NEXT is really the game they wanted to have at first release, and now can hopefully start building better depth into the framework they have.

They definitely need to add some things to the game to keep people interested in playing past a certain point. Right now, I’m still interested in hunting rare and exotic ships. Last night I finally got an S class multi-tool, and while it looks really cool I’m a bit underwhelmed to be honest. It’s not all that much better than my old A class one. I think once I have upgraded all of my ships to S class or S class exotic and finally find a really good S class freighter I’ll pretty much be done unless they add some interesting content. Currently the multi-player doesn’t really seem to have much of a point except to show your friends your base. And once you get to a certain point you are pretty much untouchable to any enemies in the game. There are no large scale space battles, not large scale planet side battles…heck, no large scale settlements that don’t look pretty much like the ones you’ve seen countless times with a bit of a difference in what’s in it and how it’s situated. That’s the main issues with the game, is that it gets repetitive.

As wolfman says, I have no complaints…I’ve gotten over 60 hours out of the game so far, and I probably have another 10 or so before I meet my own goals. That certainly justifies the price I paid for it. I hope they do more with the game, and if they do I’ll fire it back up at some point (hopefully with all my stuff still in my possession :p).

I wish they had a used space ship sales board, where NPCs would put their ships up for sale. Would be nice if they did something like that for multi-tools too. Of course, if they did that then it would probably cut 10’s of hours off the total play time for most players, as hunting the things is the end game thing at this point. It’s all there really is to do once you have built up the money, built your base, explored, done the quests and so forth. So I doubt we’ll see the feature any time soon, though I think they should do that (allowing us to sell our ships and having those in the pool too would be pretty cool as well).

I still have no idea how to get technology upgrades for the freighter at this point. I’ve tried everything I can think of, and even done some searching online. I’ve seen the same question asked in other forums and never seen a definitive answer. Still not sure if you can destroy the sentinel mothership either…that’s another one I’m not seeing a definitive answer too. When I fight them I can destroy all their weapons and that’s about it.

Has anyone extensively built out the interior of their freighter? All I’ve done is add a series of communications command centers for my frigate fleet and then left it alone, but I know some people actually build farms and refiners in the things.

I have moved my main working base to the freighter for a couple reasons.

  1. If I go to another galaxy again, it will still be there.
  2. I have a problem with planetary bases being deleted when I return to them. The base is still on the portal list, But it is back to an empty ground when I arrive.
  3. My economy, to make more money I have nothing to spend on, starts with the stuff the Frigate missions return, then I can make the rest of the pieces from the Frigate farm plants, and refiners, and sell a few more Fusion igniters or stasis chambers. It’s nice to do that all in one little area.

I have a wall of 6 refiners, and maybe 120 4 slot hydroponics. And you can make a hell of a lot more, mine is only three levels, and there is much expansion room left.

I might do that once I get my final S class freighter (I have an A class 39 atm, and I really like how it looks but I’ll probably upgrade at some point). I’ll miss my round dome glass farms though…I don’t really use the hydroponics much anymore as the others are so easy (don’t have to constantly restock them with carbon).

I don’t put carbon in them, and I don’t consider it cheating. I am willing to believe that a freighter that can warp across the galaxy, can also divert a bit of that energy to creating UV light internally.

So when you build them on a freighter you don’t have to keep putting in carbon?? Well, that would make a huge difference. I’ll have to see about setting up my ship then, as it is a bit of a pain in the ass to have to teleport back to my base when I want to build stuff.

It is also nice that you can have backpack storage, freighter storage, vault storage, farm resources, and a starship storage all within a few steps, and your other 5 backup ships storage only a few more steps away.
I obsess about storage.

Just make it really expensive, either in currency or rare materials (or both). I’m already burning plenty of hours maintaining and improving my base; I’d just rather do that than jump from station to station searching for stuff. Not to mention not wanting to use the various savegame exploits to bring the odds up to something reasonable.

I wish there was a teleport module for the freighter. I’d probably move my base there but I need the teleporter to gather gases.

So, when you upgrade a freighter, you lose everything on the old one (except for what was in transferred inventry and what the storage rooms, which comes back when you rebuild the rooms?)

I didn’t know that, and lost a substantial farm and equipment. I decided I’d stop waiting for a really big one that I could afford and upgrade incrementally. But apparently that’s a bad plan. Not sure why they couldn’t have made it go into the “Previous Base Cache.” Although I’m not sure WHAT that’s for: deleted bases don’t go in there, either. The only time I’ve ever found anything in it is when the most recent patch deleted all my storage containers.

Yeah, you lose everything. What you can do is, if you find a freighter you really like as an upgrade you can save, fly off, gate in your freighter, basically loot everything (assuming you have the space), go and buy the new one then you have to rebuild, but at least you have the mats to do it. Basically, I wouldn’t upgrade freighters until the end game, then go for a max storage (I believe that’s 48 slots) S class. I have the A class one I got in the mid game, and it’s only a 35 slot, and I’ve yet to find the really big S class to make the pain of rebuilding worth it. What I’ve done to get around that is I have 2 48 slot S class haulers that I use essentially for storage (I do keep some stuff on my fighter and my explorer, but my other exotics are basically for show).

I have started to build in the A class freighter…I didn’t realize you didn’t have to keep putting in carbon to keep the hydroponics going, so it’s been worth it. I built out a really nice base deck now…which is probably going to have the effect that I’ll only get a new freighter if the best comes along at this point. I think ever 5th jump after you’ve played 3 hours since the last event you get a freighter battle, so if you game it (which I don’t) I think you can jump into a high end system and have a better shot at the best freighter (you get a different model for each race…I have one of the ones that looks like it’s from the Warhammer 40K universe, which I think is bad ass).

The most important commodity is blueprint knowledge, anyway, so losing a bunch of planters and machinery isn’t much of a setback. Still, it seems a weird oversight.

On the other hand, despite the patch notes a couple back claiming they’d fixed it, my crew still changes race in each system.

What’s the advantage of a higher class on the freighter? I don’t warp with it (I always summon it to me, which appears to be free), and it doesn’t really “do” anything else that level would affect, does it? Does it affect mission quality in some way?

Also, did we ever figure out how to get tech upgrades for the freighter? There are slots, currently filled only with a hyperdrive, but I’ve never seen anything to go in them. This is one of my big unsolved mysteries with the game, along with “where are all the underwater suit upgrade components higher than class B?”

I certainly haven’t figured out how to get the tech upgrades for the freighter. I haven’t fought another mothership battle after the last one where I couldn’t figure out how to finish it off. I suspect that’s how you get the freighter upgrades, since you get the frigate upgrades from the battles with the smaller ships, but no idea how to destroy the mothership.

As to the S class freighter, you are right I think…the class doesn’t really matter. I suspect if you could find a max slot A class it would be just as good as the S class, since shields and weapon strength doesn’t seem to matter for the freighter…at least not to date. Perhaps they play to allow you to fight your capital ship and frigate fleet at some point, but that’s certainly not in the game yet.

Everything I’ve read elsewhere is that the motherships are not intended to be destroyed (they are the game’s way of saying the fight is over) and that freighter upgrades are not in the game yet.

Get your motor runnin’ and explode into space, NMS now has motorcycles!

Nice changes. I’m glad to see they are making advances to the game at a fairly quick pace.
