No Man's Sky - First star to the right, and straight on till morning

I wish they’d quit messin’ with the water. There used to be a somewhat horseshoe-shaped island here:

So I just found out that they are doing a year end repeat of the expeditions if you missed any. They are only 2 weeks each, and The first one ended a couple days ago before i found out, but the second is going now, then in 2 weeks the third, then the 4th

More illegal activities in 3.85. Notably:

  • Across the galaxy, star systems have fallen under outlaw control. System authority has been surrendered to rebel forces, leaving space unpoliced and ripe for piracy.
  • As well having no Sentinel interceptors, outlaw systems have their own technology merchants, their own marketplace for contraband items, their own unique mission agents, and much more…
  • The profit available to those who would prey on trader ships or passing freighters has been increased, though Sentinel interceptors will now respond to attacks on planetary trade routes…
  • After engaging in acts of space piracy, you can now restore your reputation by presenting a Forged Passport to the Station Core within any regulated space station.
  • The new Starship Combat Auto-Follow option enables automatic target locking capabilities for space combat. This mode locks onto and automatically tracks enemy ships, while still allowing precision adjustments from player input.
  • Purchase contraband goods from outlaw stations, then shuttle them across to regulated systems to sell for a large profit.
  • The risks and rewards of space combat have been rebalanced for challenge, flow and speed.

Yet another major update.

I played quite a while yesterday. Some missions to hunt pirates actually present a challenge now, arriving in waves. And loot from them, in addition to contraband goods, can be contraband upgrades. Which may or may not be more helpful than an S-class upgrade.

The abandoned space stations I visited years ago have now been occupied by pirates. Pirate bases don’t mind me docking with them but I guess official introductions need to be made via their mission arc before I can teleport to any.

Recently built a new base across a chasm on an ice world, then realized I had unintentionally created a phallic symbol when viewed from above.

never mind

I found a really interesting planet. Whole bunch of interconnected caverns, which are useful when a toxic storm rolls in.

So this is one of the games I’m planning on playing on my Steam Deck, because I really want a space exploration game in my repertoire. My problem is, I’ve given the game a couple of tries, and each time I have struggled to define a goal. On the one hand, it seems like the game wants me to travel through a billion stars at rapid pace and go through 255 galaxies. And I can trailblaze through galaxies with dizzying speed, jumping from star to star and only pausing long enough to collect resources.

On the other hand, I can build massive bases, tame animals, and do all these amazing things on just a single planet. And I find myself torn between these goals, building a half dozen half hearted bases scattered across the universe, and quitting.

I guess I’m just not sure what I should be striving for, because I haven’t been far enough down any path to really know what it offers.

Any advice from veteran players?

As typical for this sort of sandbox game, it’s up to you to decide.

I like to do missions – mainly for the mission agents in a space station because I’ve done all the ones offered by my base NPCs – and run my settlement. If you haven’t seen them yet, there are settlements you can take over and run as its overseer. You’re only allowed one settlement at a time.

There are also freighters you can manage, which operate as a headquarters for sending smaller ships on expeditions. Not really much to do there other than choosing an expedition and debriefing the expedition leader(s) upon completion. Some of the expedition logs are amusing.

The way I play is that I thoroughly explore and build on a planet until there’s not much left or I get bored and move on. Or I need a resource to do a thing that planet doesn’t have (or has little of) so I’ll look elsewhere.

The cool thing is you don’t have to leave until you want to. You can zip from planet to planet or stop to smell the carnivorous acid-spitting roses.

The whole “go to the center of the universe, and repeat 255 times” really only was a thing in the early couple years of the release. And I have always gotten the sense that it was forced on them to a large part of the pull by the publisher to get the game out the door, with a “plot”. I do think the plot is worth going through at least once, as the game has a ton of mechanics and now side deals that aren’t really very well explained without the story line, which is really a long-ass tutorial.

I’m not currently playing. I got tired of it and stopped about a week before the settlement mechanics were added. If I were to start playing again, I think it would be more fun if I had a person or two that I know playing with me. I prefer multiplayer Minecraft over solo play, and I think the same would be true for NMS.

I’ve jumped in and out of this game a few times over the many updates and am trying again with Echoes. The interface has had a major overhaul since the last time I played and there are alot of new features. They added a brand new race in this update too. Additionally if you happen to have a PSVR2 (like me) they totally unscrewed the poor graphics and now support foveated rendering. It’s like a brand new game and is the first to really show off why the PSVR2 is better than the first.

I don’t think anyone would be able to argue against Hello Games being one of the most generous studios out there. The amount of brand new fleshed out content they continue to release for free is staggering.

Whoa! Huge new update, with some very interesting features!

Too late to do so tonight but I need to check this new stuff out while waiting for Starfield DLC.

Oh wow, fully customizable ships. That’s huge.

Played a bit last night; encountered a renegade sentry ship, which prompted me to follow it to a crash site – which resulted in a restoration mission. No idea if that will make it an AI wingman, like the drone for wandering around planets, or if it can be piloted directly.

On my way to the crash site, I encountered a pirate megaship, which I had no idea what to do with so it escaped.

That’s it. I now have a Sentinel Interceptor in my collection.

I just started a new game for the update. One minor thing to note with the new version of space stations (much cooler looking I’ll say) is when using the Appearance Modifier on a station the local lighting applies. The first station I reached with my new character had “evil overlord” lighting, all reds and oranges, so my colors were badly off. Fortunately an easily fixed problem, just pick an AM in more neutral lighting; and it’s not like it costs credits.

Outside of that minor speedbump I’ve been enjoying myself.
