No Rico, I don't expect y'all to do my homework for me...

For some reason this board is not allowing me to PM you so I had to start this new thread to reply…

This is not homework. We are not receiving class credit for it…

The professor expects to use whatever means available to us to find the answer. Please unlock my thread.

For some reason this board has rules.

For some reason, they don’t allow exceptions for people who claim their teacher lets them use whatever methods.

Here’s some info on the Greek alphabet. If you transliterate your word and do a bit of internet searching I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble finding the answer.

Comments, criticism, and discussion of moderator actions belong in the BBQ Pit.

Moved from GQ to the Pit.

Fierra says look to Luke 23:41 in the Greek Bible. She’s saying this off the top of her head, so she could be mistaken…

Yeah, I’ve gotten that far already, I just can’t figure out which word it correlates to in the english translation.

And CynicalGabe, thanks for the explanation!

Oh, I just remembered that my mom has a big ol’ fancy concordance…maybe that will be of some help…

You have been given enough information to find the answer. Did you [ahem] receive it?

Your brain is at apogee to your head. We can’t help but think that the point has escaped your notice.

What are you trying say?

I’m telling you that you missed the point.

Now I’m getting confused. What is the point which you speak of?

For those of you who wandered into this thread wondering what the heck it’s about, like I did a few seconds ago:

This will tell you exactly what you need to know. And you could have found it all on your own, even!

If you’re still struggling, perhaps you can try this site (make sure you use the Ancient Greek option). You can type in the word in either Greek or transliterated Roman script.

I don’t think there’s much more help that anyone can provide you, short of giving you the actual translation.

I like how the “don’t ask for homework help” rule in GQ apparently doesn’t apply to the Pit. Makes me wish I had some homework to “pit.”

I was just wondering the same thing.

Seriously people, knock it off. If a GQ thread is closed because we don’t want people asking for help with their homework, don’t tell the OP how to do their homework in the inevitable Pit thread. It sort of defeats the point of closing the original thread, ya know?

See, I still find this a little odd. I can definitely see not solving equations for people. Or even translating a word. But what’s objectionable in explaining the principles of math or linking to a language resource?

Linking to a language resource is one thing
at least 3 of the posts in this thread go way too far.

And yeah, this is doing homework.

We’ve always distinguished between “giving homework help” and “doing homework.” Giving help in terms of links or where to look or general suggestions are always fine – I mean, let’s face it, if someone didn’t say “this is a homework assignment” but asked in GQ, someone would probably answer.

Doing the homework for someone is self-defeating. No teacher says “Use whatever means you can,” if those means include having someone write the paper for you. The whole point of the homework is to learn how to do research, how to write the paper, how to analyze the answer.

And, let us also be clear, there are plenty of websites that are dedicated to homework help. We’re not. We also have plenty of smart-asses who think that giving a wrong answer will teach a student a good lesson about proper research.
