through what machinations of the cable TV contract system has it become possible that you can be stuffed to the gills with “gene autry show” reruns but cannot find “roy rogers show” reruns anywhere? gene didn’t have no comic jeep!
I don’t know what you can’t find Roy Rogers, but one reason why Gene Autry is still on TV probably has to do with his ownership of KTLA for about 20 years. KTLA ended up as one of the first Superstations, and still is carried on a lot of cable packages across the west.
thanks for clue. very plausible explanation. it’s just that roy forgot to own a mega-TV station, which would have been a great help in his post-syndication cable viability. so as usual, the accidents of capital determine the cultural landscape.
I have no clue, but there could be syndication rights problems. And, it’s also possible that there aren’t that many surviving videotapes of the old shows. Sadly.
Hmmmm…Now I’ll have to watch because I’ve never come across either the Gene Autry Show or Roy Roger Show on cable.
But I also don’t think I’ve ever had a cable package that included KTLA.
Well I got curious and took a look over at the Offical Roy Rogers website, and saw on their message board (dated June 15, 2009) that the Rogers family had just signed a new deal:
“Under the new agreement that includes all of the existing Roy Rogers and Dale Evans intellectual property rights controlled by the estate, including film, television, music and merchandising, 821 is developing strategies to repackage and distribute archived assets and to develop and produce new properties in filmed entertainment, animated television, music, ancillary products including publishing and interactive games. The centerpiece for this launch is a major motion picture trilogy.”
So stay tuned buckaroos.
