No tailgating at the super bowl

No Fun League

There will be only three ways for the expected 80,000 ticket holders to get to the game. The committee will charter buses called the Fan Express, which will cost $51 and pick up and drop off passengers at nine locations around the region. Fans can also take N.J. Transit to the MetLife Stadium stop or be dropped off by vehicles that must have parking passes.

There will be fewer than 13,000 parking spots available for fans.
damn bros the super bowl really is some corporate bullshit. Not for true football fans at all

That’s been the case since long before you were born.

How fun is tailgating in 15 degree weather anyway?

Plenty fun, depending on the supplies you bring.

the cold weather is exactly why we need barrel fires to roast weenies on and huddle around for warmth

Exactly. Even if you are somehow fortunate enough to be able to get Super Bowl tickets at face value, the lowest-priced ticket is $500, and some tickets have a face value of $2600.

And, that’s all face value…the amount one would actually pay a ticket broker may be considerably higher.

The Super Bowl is, as noted, largely a corporate event. Some tickets are distributed to the participating teams (and a smaller number to the other teams, as well), and some fans do get to attend. As a Packer season ticket holder, I’m always entered into a lottery for Super Bowl tickets if the Packers are in the playoffs, but I’ve never actually won the “right” to tickets in that lottery (and, even if I did, and the Packers made it to the big game that year, it’d be a small-to-medium-sized fortune to actually attend).

My only concern is the traffic to and from work. My office is directly across from the stadium.

Oh, you’re going to be screwed that entire week. Where are they setting up all the activities, do you know yet? If you can, I’d talk to your boss about the possibility of working from home that entire week.

I live in Indianapolis, and I had to drive through downtown to get to and from work every day when the Super Bowl was in town. Traffic was snarled quite a bit - but I can’t imagine what it’ll be like in NYC.

You work on Sunday?

It’s not in NYC. It’s not even in NY.

I thought about specifying “New Jersey”, but figured people would be able to figure out exactly what I meant.

It’ll be busy, but NYC is much more capable of absorbing a huge event like this without major disruption than pretty much any other city in the US. I suspect this won’t have big impact anywhere but close to the stadium.

While I agree that a ban on tailgating sounds bad, the reality is, the kinds of ordinary, average fans who cook burgers or bratwurst at Lambeau Field or Soldier Field are NOT going to be attending the Super Bowl anyway. THOSE kinds of fans have been priced out of the Super Bowl for ages.

The Super Bowl has been an event for the corporate set for decades. The tailgating crowd will, as usual, stay home and watch the game on a big screen TV while cooking up a storm in the back yard.

Won’t be long before THOSE kinds of fans are priced out of regular season games. $75 a pop for crappy seats (more in some cities), a small fortune for parking, and God help you if you want to buy a beer in the stadium… I enjoy the games on TV, but I personally can’t justify the expense of going to see it live any more.
