There doesn’t seem to be a thread for last week’s comics, so I’m starting this one (Ha! day before this week’s comics come out!). I didn’t pick up my comics until Saturday, and just finished reading Power Girl #4 today, which is the main thing I wanted to mention. Anybody else reading this?
I’m enjoying the way PG has taken the new Terra under her wing. (For those who missed the Terra miniseries, the new Terra is a member of a subterranean species who has been genetically modified to appear human). Though smart and powerful, Terra is woefully naive and doesn’t know a whole lot about the way things are above ground, culturally, so PG is helping her adjust. I kind of hope she remains a regular character in the book.
I’ve mentioned already that I’m really loving Amanda Conner’s art. Her style really fits the lighthearted tone of this title. The “cheesecake” factor in this title is a fun bonus as well. Since the artist is female, I’m wondering if she’s poking a bit of fun at the traditional depictions of female superheroes, because she’s using the same conventions but doing it in a way that comes across as more “cute” than " over-the-top-gratuitous-sexy". I mean, you have to love Terra, having neglected to wear her costume under her street clothes, stripping off her skirt and charging into battle in knee-high socks and black panties with a ladybug on the butt
The highlight of issue #4, though, was a cameo appearance by the male cast of The Big Bang Theory. I would have completely missed the joke, except that my sister just last week handed me the Season 1 DVDs and insisted that I would love the show (I did!).
ETA: If I was in charge at DC, I would be finding out how fast Amanda Conner works and, if she could work fast enough, put her on Supergirl as well. Lately, the writing has been the only reason I’ve stuck with Supergirl. 44 issues into the run, they’ve been through a whole string of artists and I haven’t liked any of them after issue 13 or so.
