Non-US Dopers--How did you find this place?

The Straight Dope isn’t overseas (AFAIK). How did you SDMBers from other countries think to come here?

Not you Canadians. You think we’re not looking, but we know you sneek over here and swipe our free alternative weekly papers.

It is too clear, and so it is hard to see.

Well, I’m in the USA, but I have never read the column in a newspaper! I found this board because the Straight Dope web page is listed at
Yahoo! - Entertainment - Humor - Columns and Columnists

I have no idea. I remember I was searching for something in yahoo, found a column about it here, and everything since seems to have revolved around my addivction to it since… still havent been able to get into the chat because of my firewall, but I suppose that can only be a good thing…

well, at least one person wants to meet me…

Cheers!!

A friend of mine told me that there was a site that explained what Kemosabe really meant. He said he looked it up in a search engine and it came to here.

He was right.

I read the columns online for about a year before I joined the SDMB.

The Legend Of PigeonMan

  • Shadow of the Pigeon -
    Weirdo of the Night

I was going through the following page (don’t bother to try the link, it’s dead):
http://munshi.sonoma.edu/JAMAL/weird.html

It is called “Weird but True” or something. One of the entries was about a duck not having an echo. The site then proceeded to link to an SD column which debunked this piece of folklore. I started reading the archives and joined the message boards a few weeks afterwards.

We all know what happened since…

ZenBeam

The url I use is www.straightdope.com I guess I must get redirected without knowing it to www.straightdope.USAonly.com

Russell

RussellM: I believe ZenBeam is referring to the syndicated newspaper column seen in the US which i’ve never seen in any non-US english language newspaper. Sorry to piss on your bonfire :).
My link was the Chicago Reader, read the column, found the site and don’t work hard enough as a result ever since.

OK, I could have been a little more constructive - this is not the Pit - but the OP was just a little parochial.

A better response might have been - I wonder how many of us transition from print to e-babble, and how many of have never seen Cecil in print?

Yes, I know.
209, did you come here from the column, or did you follow a link, here about it from a friend? I suspect that most people follow a tangled web to get here, whether they start in the US or the rest of the world. ‘Here’ is not, in any real sense, ‘there’. It’s only a url. The rest of the world can easily come visit.

It wasn’t really a bonfire, just a little spark.

Russell (not in the US)

No, not a tangled web for me. Read the column in the reader (on paper), found reader online, found the straightdope. The rest is history. For me, that is. Immemorably so for the rest of you I guess

I guess I should have asked everyone for their stories about how they found this place.

Time for a new thread
