Non-vegetarians - how often do you eat vegetarian meals? How 'bout vegan?

I’ve cut waaay back on my meat intake. What meat I do eat is typically “high end”. So, I end up eating vegetarian at least a few times a week. My only bitch is when a server feels the need to point out that one of my choices is not vegetarian. I choose a tofu appetizer, a rice and beans main course, and then maybe a veal side dish (lousy example). Then the server points out, “Veal isn’t vegetarian.” No shit, sherlock.

It’s in your regular grocery store wherever the chow mein noodles and soy sauce hang out. I think the brand I get is Thai Kitchen - it’s a little jar of paste, which you refrigerate after opening (although knowing what’s in it you probably don’t really have to.) They also have red curry paste which is equally good.

Some people are stupid, you know. I often get told when I order, say, a chicken quesadilla without the chicken (sometimes I just don’t feel like meat, and I like to be able to see when I eat it so I don’t get one of those gross bits) that the beans aren’t vegetarian, which would be important information for somebody who was ordering it for different reasons, and then I have to explain that I’m not vegetarian at all which is weird and awkward.

I’m trying to eat on the cheap right now so I’m eating vegetarian at least twice a day, typically a bowl of cereal with a banana for breakfast and PB&J for lunch but I have meat every night for dinner. During my normal diet I’ll eat vegetarian maybe once a week since I’ll skip breakfast. There are few vegetarian meal that I don’t think would be improved by adding some meat to them so it’s rare that I won’t, for instance, add some chicken breast to my tomato and cucumber salad.

I’ve never eaten vegan or vegetarian on purpose, I usually throw ham in my salads.

Yes and yes.

About the only vegetable I like is corn, and it gives me digestive issues.

I’m fully omnivorous, definitely includes meat-eating. Eat cows, pigs, fish, chicken, alligators, goats, turkeys, sheep, ostriches, squirrels, etc.

If breakfasts and lunches count, vegetarian = 4-5 times per week (often eat yogurt with granola for breakfast; occasionally grilled cheese or pasta primavera for lunch).

Vegetarian dinners probably once or twice a month (completely vegetarian, no meat broth in the veggies, etc). Eat meais that don’t happen to incude meat but wherein the vegetables may have been cooked with a bit of pork = more often.

Vegan dinners probably no more than 4-5 times per year unless I have a vegan friend or relative to visit. Vegan food can be delicious but we don’t have a good restaurant specializing in it in the area; some of the middle eastern, indian, or eastasian restaurants have good vegan food ON their menu though. I don’t cook full-blown vegan meals myself unless my niece or other vegan visitor is over to eat.

Or he… GASP… dunks them in a glass of bovine mammary secretions!

Ahh, thank you. I love thai dishes with red and green curry, I just assumed it was something Very Much Involved to make. I’ll be sure to pick some up, I know my store carries Thai Kitchen stuff.

You know, I actually enjoy a glass of milk quite a bit but this sure makes it sound gross!

Well even if you can’t find the pre-mix you can still use individual spices - I can post them if you like but I’ve never had trouble finding the paste. I think if you’re in an urban centre you should be ok.

I do live in a densely populated city (the largest one there is) but if you’re making the equation:

Wealthy society = People who live in an urban or densely populated suburban area.

then you’re wrong, not to mention extraordinarily naive. There are areas by me that are extremely wealthy, there are also areas that are very poor and there are tons of areas that fall in the middle. This is true for all urban/dense surburban areas.

Actually, a couple of my (vegan) friends are on extremely tight budgets. They watch every penny.

And did you even read my post? What does what I cook (microwaving would be a better way to describe my culinary efforts) have to do with anything? And where did I say I “don’t notice” their habits? That’s not in my post. I said they don’t care what I eat unlike you who has nothing better to do than be judgmental over another person’s diet. I think this is rather sad. You obviously disagree.

I’m certainly not going to argue with you that it’s easier to be vegan in an urban environment. You have a wider variety of shops and restaurants to select from. But that’s true for many things, not just veganism. And more importantly, that’s not the argument you were making.

Well, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with someone asking if a food product has x, y or z in it or abstaining from said food so long as it’s done politely. There are plenty of reasons why someone might do that (a medical condition, allergies, not hungry, can’t stand a particular food etc.). Again, if it’s done with tact, what’s the problem? If your boss is unpleasant about it, that’s another issue but one that has to do solely with her. You shouldn’t be so narrow-minded as to conclude that all vegans are like that.

I would, however, mention that if people are constantly trying to give her foods that violate her diet, well that gets really tiring after a while, too. My mother doesn’t care for seafood. My father loves it and is always trying to get her to eat some. It’s extremely annoying.

So really, your boss could be a bitch or she might have been irritated that nobody could be bothered to order a couple of slices without cheese or with soy cheese or she might have said “I’m really sorry but I can’t have pizza” and left it at that. Without a better description from you, it’s hard to tell whether your boss is difficult or not. And as I said before, if she is truly difficult, that’s a personality issue not a vegan issue.

I never eat a totally vegan meal and the only time I can think of that I eat a vegetarian meal is when I eat leftover cheese pizza or my bran cereal in the morning. I like poultry and fish, but I loves me some cow.

Almost never cook Vegan. Made some vegi-taco’s last week with soy-chicken nuggets and some hot sauce.
