Depends on the circumstances. But in most of these cases, the consequences seem pretty minimal to me. Maybe there are a few exceptions… and at least some of those exceptions are due to pretty egregiously offensive words and actions.

Your outrage is farcical - Carson King is still beloved by the entire state of Iowa, BECAUSE he owned his shit when it came out - holding a press conference before the article (which was glowing with praise except for two short paragraphs) was published. This is Andy’s M.O. I have seen it over and over and over. He goes all into the rhetorical bombthrowing but when called on anything where he may have gotten out over his skis, he retrenches and acts like he’s just casually chatting and not really willing to stand behind anything. I don’t remember who said it, but the people who do that are the equivalent of the Family Values pastor who is caught pants down in a truck stop stall, not doing either 1 or 2 if you know what I mean.
That is to say, I believe it’s a defense mechanism for a guilty conscience, trying to feel better about oneself by pointing the finger loudly and often at evil people (or people one can pretend are evil) and hopping no one will take notice at what goes on behind that finger.
I live on the other side of the world, am out of touch, and probably have been victimized by right-wing propaganda. The tiniest little stories — like Arquette’s tweet — get blown out of proportion and show up when I’m clicking around the 'Net. I’m afraid that I’ve reacted against an extreme “political correctness” which barely even exists. I apologize if I’ve abetted the right-wing liars like Tucker Carlson.

On this Board, I myself have been lumped with Trumpists for saying things that might seem even slightly “unwoke.” Nobody who knows me could ever imagine I share anything with right-wingers, so I find it exasperating when I try to broaden debate a little, and get shut down for not adhering to today’s left-wing dogma.
But don’t worry about me — Worry about the U.S.A.! The GOP Machine of Hatred, Greed and Evil is favored to retain the Senate, and has a 50-50 chance of keeping the White House. I strongly worry that some middle-aged swing voters will be turned off by some modern progressive rhetoric.
