I have the news on as background in the morning while I WAH. Just in the last few days political ads have started running. WTF? The midterm elections are over a year away. These ads are not for or against any proposed candidates running, since it’s too early for that. Just ads either slagging or supporting local incumbent Reps and Biden.
I predict that in the future, all TV commercials will either be ads for onliine gambling sites or political in nature.
I’m seeing a lot of ads that claim that raising capital gains taxes will drive seniors to the poorhouse, accompanied by unflattering pictures of Biden, Schumer, and Pelosi. That’s the only political ad I’ve seen lately. Yes, just like all cable channels eventually show nothing but reality shows, TV commercials will decay into political ads and online casinos.
On a related matter, my phone just rang, and instead of a generic phone number my iPhone helpfully labeled it "Political Call’ in big letters. Did not answer. I generally avoid any call that doesn’t come up on my contact list, but sometimes I have to take generic calls with local area codes in case they’re a vendor or repair person I’m expecting.
I haven’t seen that one, but I’ve seen one many times here in SE Michigan in which a number of seniors are scolding Congress about the possibility that they may cut Medicare Advantage-- “do you think we’re not watching?”. It doesn’t call out any particular politicians on either the right or the left though.
ETA: I think I JUST saw the one you’re referring to: “Don’t let Washington Liberals steal our retirement!”.
The only broadcast TV I watch is the NFL, and around here that’s meant we’ve been inundated with Virginia gubernatorial ads. Glen Youngkin appears to have bought a LOT of airtime during NFL games.
Yeah, I’m guessing that Youngkin is getting infusions of cash from the national party, and money from out-of-state, as they see the VA Governor as flippable. Frankly, the ads on both sides are mostly crap of the “Ooga booga boo! I scared you!” variety. e.g. “I got shot in the head 20 years ago, parole boards exist, so don’t vote for Mcaulliffe!”
I’ve been seeing exactly one political ad lately, in NC where I live.
It’s a Trump endorsement of a Republican candidate vying for Richard Burr’s senate seat. And it’s very Trumpy.
But it makes me laugh just thinking of the money they are wasting by running this ad so far in advance of the election.
Donald, I know you are feeling your power slip away every day. You can’t do anything anymore. You can blabber about what you think other people should do, but you are nothing. Men like Abbot and DeSantis are doing things, but you can’t because you are defanged. Declawed. Powerless.
But the elections in 2022 and 2024 aren’t going to get here sooner just because you toss away money pretending that they are.
I’ve seen another one where they’re arguing against having Medicare negotiate drug prices, saying this is really about limiting what medicine you can get.
There’s one running in the Kansas City area, targeted at KC KS’s Democratic rep, talking about how the liberals want to steal your retirement money to fund Pelosi’s environmentalist agenda, or something crazy like that.
God living near DC sucks for commercials. There are ALWAYS political commercials. I don’t think we go more than a month, even after an election, when there isn’t at least one commercial running. And now that VA has betting that is all we seem to get. I hope MD never allows online betting or that’s all the commercials we’ll see, an ad for President, and ad for betting, an ad for governor, an ad for the local casinos…
Yep. Our “local” stations are all DC because we’re too far from Baltimore, and I’m sicker to death than I can say of the Virginia governor ads. It’s a real study in not-lying-but-not-quite-being-honest. At least we no longer have to watch Youngkin playing basketball and talking about how it was his ticket to college. Yeah, I’ll vote for a jock who wasn’t smart enough to get an academic scholarship. And let’s not forget all the special interest groups, like the petroleum industry, pushing their agendas.
There are dueling commercials - this one, “paid for by PhRMA,” and counter-commercials telling you to call Congress to let Medicare negotiate lower prices; I have seen AARP and “Patients for Afforadble Drugs Now” versions.
