Not able to send email

I wonder if any of the dopers have had the problem of getting everything on the internet, but not able to answer, or send out messages with their smtp server; if so how did they solve the problem. I have made several contacts with my server, my computer co. and Microsoft. I can get emails, but not able to answer or send out forwards? So far I have found no one with the answer.

Just to be clear: when you say “their smtp server”, you yourself are running one? Or do you mean one that your ISP or someone else provides? If it’s third party they will normally provide you with mail access via a website too, if so does that work OK?

But at core it must be a problem with your mail client, your PC (eg firewall), or the smtp server. Your mail provider ought to be able to diagnose these out with you.

Further details are needed to answer this question. Whose SMTP server are you using—your own, or your ISP’s, or that of some third party? What sort of authentication are you using? Are you sure the credentials you are passing are correct? What specific error message are you getting? Which e-mail client are you using? Do you or your ISP have a firewall which blocks port 25?

The problem could be as simple as your not having entered the correct username and password in your e-mail client, or as complicated as some intricate router setup involving misforwarded ports.

I have Clear.net I use clear’s smtp. For some reason(I had 5 of their Techs try to help me) one changed my port to 425 from 25, Why, I don’t know. The one Tech changed my password and tried to set me up as new, before that I couldn’t get incoming emails. Now I get incoming but still can’t send mail. One Tech asked to use my password and he was able to send me a message, then told me to send one to myself, that didn’t go through.

I use my ISP’s smtp. Thanks! The Mail provider hasn’t been able to fix it, My computer (HP) techs couldn’t find any problem, nor could Microsoft’s. I have spent at least a total of 9 hours with the ISP’s Techs They were very patient but couldn’t seem to solve the problem!

To add I also get a message that Internet Explorer has stopped working! If I try to bring up Explorer I get a page like if I Googled for a search it is Quizoulous I don’t know why that is there, or how it got there. I am in my eighties and I don’t put things on my computer that I am not sure of, nor take things off.
