I am, of course, alluding to this ongoing thread.
I love reading the newspapers in small towns. When traveling, while others will load up on cheesy souvenirs (made in China) and T-shirts (also likely made in China or some other slave-labor country), I head for the nearest newspaper box and pick up the local rag. In larger cities, I like to get the weekly freebies. This tidbit comes from one of the latter.
This particular paper just put out a Best of the City issue. They featured comments on various things around town from readers and staff alike. For example, the Best Bail Bonds category went to Aladdin. No joke! We’re eclectic that way. I guess. I haven’t lived in this town long enough to know.
The one I loved was written by a staff member, filed under “Best Parking Lot View.” The author extolled the joy of going to the local Target, running mundane errands and then out in the parking lot, you look up and, Bam! There’s a picture postcard view of Mount Rainier right in front of your eyes in all her glory! A marvelous sight indeed, though I haven’t been to Target to see it from there yet.
The best part was the way the author summed it all up: “The contrast of big box stores with stunning natural beauty is also great for a ponderous moment.” Essay gems in real life!
And with that, all I can say is, “Heavy, man, heavy.”
