I was just browsing through my almanac (as I am wont to do), and saw a list of all the Miss America winners. Outside of Vanessa Williams (whose reason for fame is obvious), I didn’t recognize even one name of a winner for anything else other than being in the contest. You’d figure that winning that contest would be a great stepping stone to fame in other areas – modeling, acting, even politics. So why did they all just drop into oblivion?
Well, now they know they’re not allowed to pose nude.
One of them was the subject of a made for tv movie because her football boyfriend beat her up. Although I may just remember her because we come from the same state. Carolynn something.
probably the only thing useful, other then the experience, that they get out of it might be those scholarships to college.
oh, um, also I think there are some negative connotations to winning a contest like that. People automatically assume your bubbleheaded and obsessed with your looks and it’s instant typecasteing.
Don’t forget that it’s MISS America. Most have married and have changed their last names.
Phyllis George was a Miss America IIRC. So was Tawny Little (who competed under her maiden name), who was a news anchor in L.A. for many years.
Mary Ann Mobley was an actress and a TV host with her husband Gary Collins.
Susan Powell hosts a home decorating show on The Learning Channel (or something akin to it).
I probably shouldn’t know all this stuff, but I suppose that’s why this board exists.
Until the 1960s, most Miss Americas likely got married and faded away like most women were expected to in America. Now they have many more job opportunities. They just aren’t ones in the spotlight.
Those 4 at least are pretty famous.
Miss America 1982 Elizabeth Ward went on to an acting career as Elizabeth Gracen.
And Ms. Gracen has claimed to be in the elite group of women who have had sex with Bill Clinton.
Elite group???
Hmmmm… By whose definition?
Kate Shindle will probably have a solid acting or singing career. Her performance of Sally Bowles in Cabaret was astounding.
Carolynn Sapp.

I would have expected more of them to be famous as well.

Elizabeth Gracen Ward is hot…and this from someone who tends to prefer blondes!
Oh, and she appears topless in “Lower Level” and I believe, “Final Mission” as well.
