As many of you know, I’ve been toiling away at the puzzle factory for many, many years. Many years. Like, 14 years. Which is a long time. But it’s been a cool job, and for a long time the fact that it is such a cool, fun job was enough to compensate for the fact that they didn’t pay me shit.
But, one can only be totally broke for so long before it starts to get old – and even the coolest job will, after a decade and a half, cease to be the delightful challenge it once was. I stayed put for a long time, though – fear and inertia, loving the job, and the knowlege that most of the publishing (I’m an editor) happening in my area is medical – did I really want to edit the Journal of Infectious Dermatology, even if it paid well?
C’mon – it’s not like there’s folks out there who want to pay me damn close to twice what I’m making now to start a gardening magazine from scratch, right?
All I know about gardens is that Mom loves them, but it’s always nice to see people get their dream jobs. Best wishes, may the job-honeymoon give way to a rewarding job-marriage
Make sure you drop a line here if you’re looking for focus groups or maybe even folks to write for you!
(Not for me, tho. Sadly, I posess only a black thumb, but my parents are another story. Mom’s a master gardener/composter and dad does the landscaping.)
Wow! Congratulations, twickster! This just made my day!
A gardening magazine from scratch! What a great oppurtunity! There’s lots of interesting things going on… pleaching, bio-intensive gardening, permaculture, xeriscaping… you can make a garden that’s beautiful, fruitful, and easy on the pocketbook as well!
(And here I thought ‘working at the puzzle factory’ meant you worked for the CIA…)
Many congrats, twicks!! Here’s a great idea for your first issue - a yard makeover! And since we’re friends and all, I’ll let you use my yard! No, really, I don’t mind. I want you to be successful! :D:D:D:D
The first issue will be January of ‘07. We’re going to be doing a lot of work this year on photographing peoples’ gardens, etc., during this year’s growing season.
I wouldn’t dream of trying to drum up business here – but if a catalogue company contacts you sometime this summer or fall and wants you to join a club type deal, one benefit of which is a really cool magazine … well, think about it, 'kay?
Fantastic, Twix. So happy for you. I know how undervalued you felt on your old job, and how much pleasure gardening, and thinking about gardening, means to you.
