(Not so)Brilliant Christmas Ad

Just saw this story on the news.
A property developer in Stockholm decided to place an ad in the newspaper instead of sending Christmas cards to customers and employees.

The company is called locum (Yes, without a capital L).

In the ad their ad agency had placed a heart in place of the o.

l(heart)cum …

Needless to say they were a bit embarassed.

That is…snicker unfortunate.

My questions are, though, just how can one miss a mistake like that? Surely the proofreaders and developers of the ad saw the finished product beforehand. And I wasn’t aware that the Swedish used the same word for jizz that we did.

You learn something new every day.

We don´t use the same word in swedish. Almost everyone knows english, and a lot of those people have watched a certain type of films.

They interviewed someone at the ad agency and their comment was “Ooops, we didn´t think in english”.

They also showed it to people on the street and 90% of those asked knew the english meaning of the word.

Which begs the question: what word do you use? I don’t think Babelfish is going to help.
