"Not YOUR brand of dope, but the STRAIGHT DOPE"

I just saw one of the most funny, yet psychotic movies I have ever seen, called REEFER MADNESS: The New Hit Musical - certainly rivaling the ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’, IMHO. REEFER MADNESS: The New Hit Musical is a 2005 Showtime re-work (with new songs added) of the off-broadway musical which, in turn, had parodied the real, original and serious REEFER MADNESS film put out in 1936 by Louis J. Gasnier - a true propaganda film.

Anyway, the reason I’m bringing this up here is because at some point, Jesus shows up and exclaims: “I’m Here to bring you UP… with Dope. Not YOUR brand of dope, but the STRAIGHT DOPE”. I thought, “MY GOD! I need to post this on the Straight Dope and query other dopers about REEFER MADNESS”, also making mention of it’s tongue-in-cheek proddings about Dope and all. The words of the psychotic musical performances seem to resonate many of the issues that pop up on the board regularly.

Has anyone else seen this movie & what did you think?

I laughed so hard through the whole freaking movie, that I am completely sore now.

I found the original Reefer Madness boring, despite its ironic cult-classic status. However, I really got a kick out of the kitschy musical, and enjoyed Alan “Nightcrawler” Cumming and Kristen “Veronica Mars” Bell in it.

I saw it when it first came out and loved it. You walking around humming the songs like I did at first?

“Mary Jame/Mary Lane” actually won an emmy. IIRC, the movie won two others, I think for make-up and choreography.

“Play faster! Faster! Faster! Hahahahahahahahaha!!!”

There’s too many to name here, but here are some of my favorite quotes that come to mind:

“Thinking it could be an ordinary, perfectly harmless cigarette, uh-uh, the kind that we all used to enjoy as teenagers.”

“Stop indulging like a Roman.”

“I got a new God now.”

… now if only I could stop singing the songs.

I take it you guys have seen the original movie? If not, you’ve got to watch it. It’s so funny, it’s hard for me to believe the musical could be better.

“Marijuana . . . the evil weed with roots in the pit of FIREY HELL.”

Goodness, that was boring, I didn’t make it though the whole thing yet - I am actually viewing the intro again as I am typing. I have rarely seen something so ludicrous. I see why people, in retro-spect, think WR Hearst was just out to get the Hemp industry, with an almost Marvel-level of supervillianous demur. I expect it to be horribly ludicrous but otherwise dull 'til the end…

“When Danger’s near, exploit their fear!”

“Changing all our children into hooligans and whores!”

That wasn’t Jesus, it was Cecil. People often confuse the two.
