NYC Dopers: Come see me music direct a production of "Reefer Madness"!

Thanks to Marley23 for green-lighting this thread! I’m a music director/keyboardist for Broadway/Off-Broadway shows, and we’re getting set to open the first NYC production of Reefer Madness since the original in 2001. If you opened this thread, you probably know it’s a crazy-ass musical based on the 1936 propaganda film that tries to explain the dangers of marijuana to the youth of society. Think Little Shop of Horrors but with doobies.

The show is actually in Brooklyn, but all the actors are professional and I’ve put together a kickin’ 5-piece band. So check out the website to see the show dates if you want to come! The buzz is high (no pun intended)… the writers are coming to see it, as is Neve Campbell (who was in the movie of the musical version, which came out in 2005). If you’re a fan of musical theater you probably already know (and love) the show, and if you hate musical theater you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the truly rockin’ songs (lots of electric guitar) and copious amounts of blood and gore (all done in a funny, tongue-in-cheek way, of course).

Let me know if you have any questions, and I hope to see you there!

Well this sunk like a stone.

I’ll use my one free bump to say what I should have said in the OP: The dates of the show are October 23-November 14. It’s 16 performances over four weekends… hope some of you can make it!

I’ll have to see what I’m doing those weekends. I’ve never seen the show but I loved the TV movie!

I appreciate the info but can’t make this weekend work for a trip to Brooklyn.

Best of luck with it and let us know how it goes!

I met Neve Campbell on a plane during the Party of 5 days - she was very nice.

Hey, congrats and good luck! I’ve heard of the musical, but haven’t seen it - will come by if I can.

I’m planning on taking the gf to one of the November shows. I’ve never seen the musical, but I have seen the original propaganda film. Looking forward to it!

Awesome! You’ll have to be sure and say hi afterwards, as I haven’t met too many Dopers IRL. I’ll be the one conducting the band and playing two keyboards.

Rodgers01, I hope you can make it!

WordMan, just so you know, it’s 16 performances over four weekends!

This is very cool! I loved the tv movie, and I have the soundtrack for both the tv movie and stage production - I’d be thrilled to see this live. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get up to New York, but I certainly will if at all possible.

Thank you for helping to bring a great show back to the stage!

So, how was the opening weekend? Did you guys break legs?

It was great, thanks for asking! Opening night was sold out. Yesterday was a matinee so it was a little lighter (and a generally older audience, not quite right for this show) but it was still a great opening weekend. We were all so happy to finally have laughter and responses to the jokes; it’s the kind of show that really benefits from having that to play off of.

And the band sounded great.

So I just bought my tickets, Nov 6, at the 2 pm showing. Can’t wait to see the show, and I’ll definitely try to say hey after, let my girlfriend think I know people in show business.

Awesome! We had a great show tonight with a really lively audience. Historically, matinees are made up of a quieter, older crowd, so make sure you bring the laughter!

Great show last Saturday! I talked a couple of friends into going with us (I’ll be expecting my commission in the mail) and we all had a great time. The cast was talented and very enthusiastic, the script was funny, and the music was flawless, at least in this layman’s opinion. My favorite number was “Murder,” although “Listen to Jesus,” wins the award for being the most infectious earworm. The biggest laugh for me was when they were burning the dangerous books that were corrupting the youth of America. The Communist Manifesto, The Importance of Being Earnest, and The Origin of Species lol. Just to reiterate, it was a great show, and we all had a lot of fun seeing it.

Oh and sorry it took me so long to respond, I’ve had an incredibly busy and frantic last two weeks. I meant to post something like “Oh I’ll be the bearded guy in his 20s with the three blond girls, say what’s up after the show,” but as I said, it’s been a crazy busy last two weeks and I forgot. The show was a nice little break from all the work though. My compliments to you and the rest of the cast.

I forgot to add,

The reefer gave me the munchies… FOR HUMAN FLESH!

Thanks for the rave; glad you enjoyed it! This is the last weekend, for anyone still wanting to come. A show tonight, two tomorrow, and a final matinee on Sunday.

And yes, it’s no coincidence they sell brownies at the show.

Oh, man … I wish I could come see it, but I’m warping young minds as a moot court judge on Saturday, and I’ve a prior committment that night … honestly, is the matinee likely to be good, or is the cast likely to just be (understandably) burned out by that point?

No, it’s the final weekend; everyone is sad that it’s ending so they’ll be bringing their A-game to make sure we go out in style. Also, the audience will be more full than most matinees, which means more energy, because of all the slackers who waited until the last minute.

No, probably just too stoned to care.
