Notes on Game & Post-Count Padding/Party Threads

I’ve never really participated in game threads. I’ve always considered them SPAM. And post count party threads are dumb.

Good move.

Some game threads have a good reputation and deserve to stay on, such as The Celebrity Death Pool. Post padding threads should always be closed. They are very annoying, though I haven’t seen any for a while.

Closing a thread after xxx posts is unfair. Some threads are enlightening and fun, even after they reach ten or more pages and hundreds of posts. Besides, threads rarely reach this point, so why worry?

EXACTLY like SPAM… nobody forces you to click on them and open them… How does this affect you in ANY way, shape or form?

Well, seeing that I paid to help out with BANDWIDTH issues, and you haven’t, should you really be asking that question?

I think the issue here is that they use up valuable bandwidth that the rest of us non spammers like to use on threads that require a bit more thought.

Gee, it’s nice to see that the board subscription thing hasn’t made some people feel as if they are more special than others.

I knew someone was going to say that. I’m not going to bother to explain to the either of you that the point here is bandwidth usage. And if either of you aren’t paid, seriously, who are you to talk?

Do either of you run a board? I do. I pay for it, as well as a few others. NOTHING in life is free.

Pay up here and then I’ll argue.

" "

So, let me get this straight… your opinion matters more than my opinion simply because I haven’t gotten around to paying yet??? Grow up!

Um. Just so I’m sure I have this straight… they should PAY…for the priveledge of arguing with YOU??? I’m sure they’re bowled over by the generosity of your offer…

Ok, since this is obviously not going over well through text…

How would you like it if someone came over to YOUR house to stay. They used an inordinate amount of your resources. Water. Gas. Electricity. (i.e. this board’s bandwidth to spam). They contributed NOTHING to the upkeep of the house (i.e. didn’t help pay for the board–a subscription). Then they had the nerve to come up to the owner or people who did pay for the rent and the utilities and complain about the house and its rules.

Really, you think that’s alright? Gee, I’d love to come and live with you guys who think this is fine. I could live rent-free and bitch at you when you serve me dinner and it’s not to my liking.

It’s not that it’s a privilege to argue with me, it’s “help out or shut up.”

Kinda like if you don’t vote, don’t bitch about who is running the country. Does that make it clearer?

Um, yes. But that wasnt the question. The question was, “If I pay, am I now allowed to open whatever damn thread I want, flirt or otherwise?” If you don’t like them, DON’T READ THEM.
And, since you already stated you don’t…what’s your gripe? No one is gluing your eyeballs to the screen.
The forum is “Mundane. Pointless…” If you want intellectual debate, head on over to Great Debates. As you’re coming off as condescending and self righteous.

Knock it off, the lot of you. If you want to play Elitist Pigs & Freedom Fighters, you can do so in the Pit. This thread is about Game Threads and Post Count Party threads. Not whether you’re more entitled to voice an opinion once you’ve coughed up $5.

The point is, other people DO click on them. And that uses resources that you and I pay for. If you are fine with that, fine.

I’m not. So I stated I’m glad they are scaling back on it. That makes me an elitist? WOW.

Regardless if this forum is mundane and pointless, last time I checked, it still uses the same resources as Great Debates and elsewhere.

The pomposity! The pretention! Just because you paid five bucks means you can lord that over me? Because I haven’t yet paid means I am some kind of serf to you??? I thought this was the Dope! Fighting this type of medieval thinking is what this place is all about.

That’s fine. Sorry I was typing out my reply to Maureen before you posted.

I merely posted getting rid of the spam was fine by me and obviously people didn’t appreciate it. Cheapos

Heh heh heh… have you been to the Pit lately, dear?

Hey, I don’t know if anyone’s still looking at this or not, but the question as to whether or not paying members will be limited to what they post has not been answered. It is more apt that a non-paying person asks this question due to the fact that if a person is considering whether or not to start paying, they want to know what their getting for their money. I was all set to pay the 5 bucks, and the $7.whatever afterwards, until I read this thread. Games like the x in y words, and the word morphing game are what got me to go from the archive to the boards in the first place. And seriously, to call that spam is kinda weird. Those games hold no less mental effort than any debate, and in the end, both usually amount to the same thing being accomplished… not much. Anywho, I would really like to have the moderators weigh in on what the policy hence forth will be for paying customers so I can decide whether or not to become one. Thanks

From what I’ve seen, the admin is not likely to change any of these “rules.” It will be left up to the whim of the day, as always. Sometimes this works out well, other times it seems completely arbitrary. Part of the fun of being here.

btw, are you an evil Llama?

Okay, I’ve read this entire thread, and two things are still bothering me:

  1. What the hell is a game thread?

2: What the hell is a post-count party?

Sorry, I’m still pretty new here. I’m happy to follow the rules, do as the Romans, etc. But I paid my five bucks, so I feel like I should be allowed to know what this rule is that I’m being asked to follow.

Someone please help.

Game thread
Post count party

Oh. Thanks.

I don’t see why a game thread is inherently more of a waste of bandwidth than any other thread. People who are into trivia are often into puzzles and games as well; I can’t say I’m surprised that some Dopers want game threads.

If a given thread uses a lot of bandwidth, that means a lot of people are looking at it and posting to it. Which means that they’re enjoying it. Is that not the point?

The more popular something is, the more bandwidth it’s going to eat, right? So by that logic, the ideal thread is one that no one looks at or posts to, since it doesn’t use any bandwidth at all. That doesn’t sound all that fun to me. It seems like the subtext here is:

Have Fun On Our Message Board!!

…but don’t post anything or read any posts because it wastes bandwidth

That said, the post-count party threads do seem pretty dumb to me, though I have to grant that my argument above should apply equally to them.
