As I walked through virtually empty airports this week, I was stunned by how polarized by fear most of us Americans are, and how odd our fears are in light of the facts.
During the past week we have suffered the tragic loss of approximately 250 fellow air travelers as a result of these horrific terroist attacks. Even more more shocking is the loss of approximately 6,500 fellow citizens of the world who were simply doing their jobs at the Pentagon and the WTC.
Statistically, an average of approximately 4,100 Americans die in automobile accidents every week.
Given these facts, why are millions of Americans able to get into their cars and drive to work in tall buildings every day, but fearful of flying or investing their money in America?
Are we going to allow ourselves to be polarized by fear of this faceless enemy? The very best way that the average American can fight back is to get on a plane and fly, stay in a hotel or buy some stock–to simply refuse to be broken by fear.
I beseech you, my fellow Americans and all citizens of the free world, to refuse to be broken.
Write, call and/or e-mail your government representatives, mayors, senators, everybody in the Whitehouse, your friends and relatives. Demand that the government provide an emotional rebel rouser of the ilk of Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill or FDR to rally us out of our shells and into action. Put on your thinking caps and come up with brilliant ideas that will help motivate us back into action.
Bush is doing well enough, but he lacks the charisma to rally us beyond our fears. What an amazing impact it would have upon Americans now if G.W. Bush, et al, had the insight and courage to appoint and publicly support Bill Clinton to use his powerful speaking skill to push us beyond our fears–to call us to act on the home front to save the freedom we have long fought to earn.
These are radical times that call us to think and act way out of the box. We must all reach deep inside ourselves and find the courage to act NOW.
