November sweeps - Rediculous ratings grabbing news teasers

Its November, one of the months where TV station ratings are measured. It is very important for the stations to get viewership this month, because their advertising rates are tied to the number of people watching their station.

Typically, the evening news programs hype stories with the most alarming teasers that they play constantly during prime time programming.

Last night, a local channel promised to expose the deadly hazard that is grooved pavement. After interviewing a couple of people who had accidents on it, they then talked to the engineers who explained it. Conclusion - the drivers freaked out when the surface changed.

I also see this story from Cleveland -
*A television news anchor appeared on the air nude in a first-person report about an artist’s photographs, drawing a record number of viewers for the time slot, the station said. *

Whatever works, i guess. So what are the overhyped, absurd, downright stupid ratings grabs in your market?

Well, a kid took some mercury to school the other day. As a result, there were about 5 reports on why it’s okay to freak out about it.

“Have those panties you bought been worn by someone else? Our hidden cameras catch retailers in the act.”

  • Seen in Los Angeles this week

Inside, I wept a little.

The really funny thing about the Cleveland nudie newscaster is that the story was filmed (taped, whatever) way back in June, which is a long time to be stuck in editing.

I hope that’s what that moisture was.

Can this [Insert clip from disaster movie of the week] happen here?!!
News at 10!!

From a Salt Lake station:

 Shudder!

Denver: Static electricity in your sweater can start a fire when you are pumping gas!

They found one woman it hapened to, in 2001. But they did have it on film from the gas station security camera. I know, because they showed the clip about 20 times in the two minute report.
