Now seeing discourse ads

I’m not sure if this goes here or in the “about this site” forum.

I am seeing an ad for discourse mixed in the threads in imho.

I’m not particularly upset at this point, at least, not with discourse. I am a little concerned about my prophylactic software though. I haven’t seen ads on here in so long I tend to forget they exist.

Again, not upset with that particular ad or discourse, just wondering if I need to check my blockers and whatnot to make sure things are updated properly or is discourse modifying things to allow discourse specific ads.

I haven’t seen any yet, and I’m on the site multiple times a day. Can you show us what you are seeing?

Site Feedback is about the software that runs this board so this seems like the right place.

I’ve been getting them on my cellphone web pages, but I’m not logged in. A little 2 line text add saying

Brought to you by Discourse - create
your own community for $20/mo

with a “Ad” box in grey on the left

It seems to be only placed after the OP. Other ads (lower down) are (various) larger blank spots with ADVERTISEMENT headline. I don’t know what ad blocking Samsung Internet uses.

This is probably key. I don’t see these promotional blurbs when I’m logged in, but if I look at a thread in an incognito tab (i.e., not logged in), it’s there.

That’s what I’m seeing, on a laptop and logged in.

Brought to you by Discourse - create
your own community for $20/mo

Are you sure it doesn’t say “from $20/mo” ?!

Definitely “for”.

If it was one of those scam commercials on TV it would be

Up to $20

or more

Sorry to everyone who posted, for the delay. Exactly this is what I’m seeing. (Well, not the samsung bits, I have an iphone)I’m not upset by it, as ads go it’s a pretty “good” one in that it’s not obnoxious and disruptive. I was just concerned that perhaps my protective software wasn’t updated properly for some reason. However, if discourse coded this ad as an integral part of the website somehow(no I don’t know how that works) so that ad blockers and what-have-you don’t recognise it, well, it isn’t bothersome to me.

As far as I am aware, nothing has changed on the SDMB side of things.

You are a guest, so you should see ads. This is nothing new.

You are in the Member user group (you were a paid member before we switched to Discourse). So you will not see ads.

We used to have a paid subscription system. Members and Charter Members did not see ads and had Marketplace privileges. This subscription system was never fully ported over to Discourse. The Member and the Charter Member user groups were ported over and are still intact. The payment portion of the system was never implemented on Discourse, and the mechanism to remove users from those user groups if the membership was not paid for that year was also never implemented. At this point, it’s unlikely that the rest of the subscription system will ever be implemented.

As a result of all of this, if you were a paid Member or Charter Member, you are currently still a member of that user group, and your membership will never expire. And those user groups do not see ads. So if your subscription was paid and up to date when we switched to Discourse, you get ad-free viewing of the SDMB.

Note - If you are using Chrome to access the SDMB, Google recently made “security improvements” to Chrome which break ad blockers. If you had an ad blocker and you use Chrome, the ad blocker has likely been disabled.

Search for Manifest V3 if you want to know more details.

Firefox has publicly announced that they will continue to support ad blockers. Brave is another browser that blocks ads. Chrome initially allowed you to re-enable your ad blocker after Chrome disabled it, but as of July, Chrome is now turning off ad blockers and is refusing to allow you to re-enable them.
