Now that Elon Musk has bought Twitter - now the Pit edition (Part 1)

It’s now not possible to view Twitter at all without an account/signing in.

concerning

If that’s supposed to make me sign up, it’s not happening. It may work for others, though, which makes me wonder how long before Elmo brags about the big jump in signups under his brilliant management (and doubles his ad rates).

OTOH, like so many of Elmo’s “agile” strategies, this may not last more than a day or two.

Based on some quick checking, it looks like they treat Google as an exception; you see twitter text in search results but can’t click through unless you’re signed in. Appears intended to “encourage” account creation by baiting with partial exposure.

So you’re saying that Elon is a master baiter?

Aggressively so, in public no less.

Nitter.net still works, though

Not going there “nitter” without a full explanation. I value my computer and accounts too much.

AFAICT Nitter is just Twitter pared down to the basics. Not unsafe at all.

Detailed discussion and analysis of the new behavior, including some workarounds, can be found here:

(And yes I’m aware this is a reddit link which is mildly ironic given that they’ve had some management issues of their own lately.)

FYI that Reddit thread is from 2 years ago

Oh. Well, shit. Sorry, came up at the top of the search and I just skimmed.

That’s the other site Skimmdit, it’s not as popular.

I would argue that it is possibly the most read site on the internet, battling with JustReadTheHeadline.net for number one.

An interesting twist on the Hate-for-Musk’s-Twitter, is that I often see “news” (absolutely need the scare quotes) that is nothing more than a clickbait headline and a single sentence followed by pages of tweets about some current event. Both serious and not-so-serious journalism and commentary is little more than curated twitter threads. I wonder if they’ll just imbed images of the tweets, or if a bunch of low-effort individuals are going to be without their daily dose of attention.

I find I don’t care either way.

If I never again see a headline like “_____ world reacts to ____”, I would be so much more pleasant to be around.

Elmo Nusk has commented on the latest issue in this Tweet:

Here’s a screenshot of it

It sounds like Twitter will be a “walled garden”, a closed-off place only for Twitter members, until Melon Usk figures out a way to monetize everyone’s past Tweets, which may be being used to train AI.

“Data pillaging” sounds suspiciously like people just downloading stuff as you’d expect from an online social media platform.

Reading between the lines, their servers are so crappy now since he fired most of his workers that they can’t handle their normal amount of traffic, and had to find a way to limit it.

Nah, clearly Elmo has attracted the attention of the Huns or the Visigoths. Nothing to do with his brilliant management.

I know that’s the reason he gave, but it might have nothing to do with data performance. It could simply be an attempt to get more people to sign up.
