Now that Elon Musk has bought Twitter - now the Pit edition (Part 2)

I miss the days when Godwinizing a thread did not involve so many actual, literal fascists

Elon is absolutely loathsome in so many ways.

Would you buy a car that might get burned down?

I wonder if insurers are going to start looking at Tesla vehicles as even greater risks than they do already.

Be a shame if some Teslabro couldn’t insure their replacement vehicle.

Well, there’s plenty of precedent that vehicles that are statistically more prone to theft are more expensive to insure, though I doubt it would get to the point due to the vandalism. Right now, the costs to repair a Tesla are substantially higher than other EVs, which are somewhat higher than ICE, so I’m sure there’s a built in premium on insuring them right now.

Actually, what is likely killing those (evil AND otherwise) with Tesla vehicles is that most insurance policies only cover a car to the current market value. And that’s been cratering for used Teslas - combine that with the high cost of repair, and figure in the not-so-distant future almost any body damage is going to be a total loss claim, with said loss paid out at current market value, with LOTS of people seeing massive losses between their original purchase and that settlement.

If they intend on doing that they’ll find an excuse regardless of whether we “give” them one or not.

Good point. Hell, some of these torchings could even be false flags.

If I were a regretful owner this would be a golden opportunity to trade into a different EV with the insurance money.

“I guess they’re just getting set on fire now, whaddya gonna do?” (shrug)

That’s a very good point. I’ve never had an accident in 50 years of drivng (as I continue to brag!) but my son did some years ago. There was enough damage that the car looked likely to be a write-off, as indeed it probably would have been, causing everyone a lot of grief as the putative market value was not a large sum and buying an equivalent replacement to this car which had been very well maintained its whole life for the amount of the write-off would have been essentially impossible.

Fortunately the ex-wife had contacts throughout the auto and insurance industries and managed to pull some strings. In the end, a friendly body shop that she had done a lot of business with was given the OK to go ahead and repair. I remember driving my son over to pick up the repaired car and the shop owner proudly showing me the work that had been done. JFC, multiple body panels, a headlight assembly, and an entire door had been completely replaced. But the guy was working for a repeat business customer and knew what he was doing, and the car was, if not as good as new, perhaps even better than its original condition. A fantastically better outcome than simply a cheque from the insurance company. But it was actually win-win, because the insurance company got a decent deal out of it, too, so everybody was happy!

This so much.

I get it, I am angry too, but this will not help affect the change we want.

I disagree.
Making Tesla undesirable, ruining their resale value,
Will absolutely hurt the right people.

Tesla stock is still valued very, very high.
If it would drop to something resembling a sane value Elmo would not be in the top 10 of richest people.
Trump would drop him like a hot potato.

Trump would drop him like a hot potato if he were not rich, famous, and inclined to put money towards Trump.

Unfortunately, he has a long way to drop before he’s out of that category. “Not in the top ten” wouldn’t be sufficient.

I really don’t get some of you.

Every tesla owner I know is liberal. Vandalizing them is stupid.

Cybertrucks, sure, owners are MAGAscum and Elmo fanbois. Leave the cars alone.

Burning ordinary people’s cars is neither moral nor just. It may, however, be effective.

Then they can prove it by divesting themselves of their swastikars.

It may not be economically feasible for them to just sell their current car (especially at currently depressed prices) and buy another brand.

Unless it’s a cybertruck in which case I’ve no bloody sympathy.

Teslas aren’t entry-level cars. If you could afford a Tesla you can afford a Hyundai.

Before you bought it, sure.

Most people I know who own them do not have the luxury to sell or give their cars away years early.

Most Cybertruck owners don’t, either, but fuck 'em. They knew what they were getting into, so I have no fucks to give about their personal finances.

But go on looking down on people from that moral high ground. It really helps build your case.

Then they can decide whether they’d rather do the right thing or the easy thing, and after all of this is over those of us who chose to do the right thing will remember who valued comfort over freedom.

Lol. What the fuck are you going to do Mr Internet Tough Guy? Send them unsolicited pics of you frowning at them with your three arrow flag behind you?
