The National Rifle Association is associated, right or wrongly, with a Conservative/Republican political outlook. Are there Center-Left/Progressive memberes within the NRA? If yes, do they have some sort of caucus to throw their supports towards certain Progressive political candidates? Or is there such thing as an association of handgun/rifle owners who are Progressives/Center-Left?
Michael Moore certainly made a big deal about him being an NRA member in Bowling for Columbine. The NRA doesn’t seem to require any specific political opinions from its members, although the conservatives are the most vocal.
I somehow doubt Pink Pistols is a conservative group.
Had forgotten about that.
I am just curious since I am decidly on the Left on my politics…but I have no problem with handgun ownership, per se. From googling, I had found this web page:
http://www.progunprogressive.com/
But I am still curious if there is a group of organized progressive handgun owners.
 Whoa!
It’s been reported Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the AK-47, is an NRA member. He is (was?) a communist, right?
Well, there is this club. It is known for left wing politics, and is the only place to elect a socialist Representative, yet is one of only two states where concealed carry is legal without a permit.
In all seriousness, I don’t know of a specific left-wing/pro-gun group, although maybe there should be. I know the NRA is a major turn off to me when they get into non-gun politics and political sponsorship.
Can it also be assumed the Black Panthers and the Young Lords were pro-gun?
Well. I know a good number of what’s called “nationalist revolutionary movements” or “revolutionary Left” groups were very much pro-gun ownership. Afterall, a popular Black Panther chant was:
But are such groups active in the NRA?
There’s also the libertarian wing (most of whom are closer to the original sense of the word “liberal”), who simply don’t like the government telling them what to do one way or another.
Yes, there are progressive/left members of the NRA. However, the political goal of the NRA is preservation of 2nd Amendment rights to bear arms. Very few liberal candidates for office declare their support for gun rights, and nearly all conservative candidates do. Theoretically, that’s the reason the NRA puts its considerable muscle on the side of mostly conservative candidates.
