NS 7.1, What means: "Building summary trash file"?

My main browser and e-mail is Netscape 7.1. Every now and then, when I try to empty my trash folder, at the bottom of the wndow I get this message, “Buildng summary trash file.” Today, I had ONE item in the trash folder; I hit delete, and then waited 3 minutes while NS built the summary trash file. Is NS keeping some kind of file on my e-mail messages? What is this “summary trash file” for anyway?

The summary file is the list of messages and headers for each folder that is maintained so that the e-mail program doesn’t have to load the entire folder just to display a message list. I have no idea why Netscape is taking so long to generate a summary file for an empty folder.

I would strongly suggest that you upgrade to the latest version of Mozilla. Netscape 7.1 is based off of a rather old version of Mozilla (v1.4) and is no longer supported. Upgrading to Mozilla will give you new features, fix bugs, and improve usability significantly. The current version of Mozilla is 1.6, with 1.7RC1 also available and slated to go final on May 21st. You will be able to import your old bookmarks and e-mail with no problems.

I agree. Mozilla 1.6 is far superior to Navigator (or IE) anything anymore. Mozilla 1.7 has been released but isn’t a milestone.

Mozilla v1.7 is currently in Release Candidate status, meaning the final version hasn’t been released yet. Once it is released on May 21st, it will become the new suggested build for all users of the Mozilla suite. For more information, see the Mozilla Development Roadmap and Release Schedule.

There are two other applications on the Horizon that will radically change the Mozilla Suite. The current Mozilla webbrowser, Seamonkey, is slated to be replaced with a new browser called FireFox. FireFox is about to hit v0.9, and will probably be integrated into Mozilla in v1.8. The current E-mail/Newsgroup program is also slated to be replaced with an application called Thunderbird, of which v0.6 is about to be released. This program is less far along in development than FireFox, so will probably be merged into Mozilla later. These applications are smaller, faster, and better than those currently part of Mozilla.

I will upgrade. I’ve been having other problems too, such as e-mail and other apps locking up on me, so it’s time. Thanks for the advice.
