NVidia GeForce 7600 Graphics Card

I recently replaced a GeForce 5900 card with a 7600 GS.

After downloading the most current driver (181.20) from the NVidia website and letting the Windows “found new hardware” wizard try to install the driver, I get the following error:

“There was a problem installing this hardware:An error occurred during the installation of the device. The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request”

Using the Nvidia installer it says “Your system has not been modified” and you can reboot or reboot later, neither work.

I have tried:

removing the device / re-adding, running driver sweeper (because driver cleaner is now payware), removing all start-up items using msconfig, removing all Nvidia software, removing all Nvidia registry keys, most of the above while in Safe mode, 4 different version of Nvidia drivers, uninstalling Novell Client, removing Macaffee virus startup, and basically try hundreds of combinations of the above with hundreds of reboots.

I’m at a loss.

Any suggestions to get the drivers to install properly?

Running Windows XP, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+, 2GHz, 1GB RAM

Have you tried looking in the Event Log? Anything of import there?

Have you tried setting the McAfee services to Disabled?

Here’s how I usually install video drivers for a radically new card:

Uninstall old driver. Reboot if necessary. Install VGA driver. Reboot. Log in, let everything start, then shut down and power off. Insert new card. Power on and install driver.

The reason for installing the VGA driver and shutting down with it installed is to provide a clean base.

Nothing helpful in the log and I’ve turned off McAfee services completely with no luck.

Haven’t tried the VGA driver installation. Maybe I’ll give that a whirl.

Thanks for the response.

I have seen a few people having odd troubles with their 7600 on various forums and sometimes the new drivers themselves seem to the problem. I wonder if you could try an earlier driver set to see if that works WinXP/2k 32-bit - (91.47)|NVIDIA

If Quartz’s ideas don’t work out, consider the possibility that the card you bought is simply faulty.

I tried earlier driver versions to no avail. The installer bombs every time (while copying driver files), no matter which version tries to install.

We tried the card in another computer, and it works, so I don’t think it’s the card.

I did NOT uninstall the previous Nvidia drivers before I replaced the old card. The problem started after I installed the new card and began the “found hardware” process.

I’ve read in countless places about other folk having the same issue with the newer driver (181.20).

Whatever changed (on my system), started then.

I’ve restored again (and reinstalled my old card), and will start the process over.

At the moment, I’m trying to uninstall the Nvidia NV35 driver that my old card (5900) is using. Unfortunately, Windows complains and won’t let me uninstall. I’m looking for a workaround.

I’m still open for suggestions and I’ll post back after I’ve tried and tried again. And again and again.

<sigh>

After many failed attempts, I finally got the drivers to install!

A coworker recommended a small program called “Move on Boot” that can move/rename/delete files on startup before the file system gains access to lock them.

MOB (heh) couldn’t delete the Nvidia files (C:\WINDOWS\system32
v*) causing the problem, but it was able to move them to another directory.

Once the files were moved, I was able to install the drivers and get the card to work.

Perseverance paid off.

Yay!

Thanks for all the responses.
