Compter Geeks, I need your help!

I am having a problem and no tech support services seem to be able to help me and that, I think, is pretty sad, so a friend introduced me to this site and said if anybody could help me, they would probably be on this site, so here we go:

I recently reformatted my computer and when I reinstalled Windows '98, my color was wrong, it said I only had the 2 color or 16 color options. Now, I know this was due to a driver problem with my graphics card. The graphics card my computer says I have, is a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter, when I checked my computer I found that the model/make of my graphics card was actually VGA-RZXA-8SDJ B.O.M. Ver 2.3.2.1

After finding this out I went straight to my computer's manufacturer's site to see if I could find the proper driver and download it. My computer is a Pionex by the way. I found the driver that matched, and I tried other numerous drivers that could have possibly matched just be on the safe side.

After I downloaded these I went through my computer, properties, device manager, system adapters, the current adapter that I had, then it's properties, then I went to update driver, and when I had it search for a driver I had it search directly to the place where I had downloaded each of the drivers I had gotten off of the manufacturer's site, but each time I tried it kept saying, "The best driver for this device windows found is already installed on this computer." Oh, how I loathe that sentence.

So now I am at a loss for what to do. This problem has been going on for almost two weeks and I really don't want to have to pay some guy to come over and fix it and find out the problem was some small minute detail I overlooked, because that would make me a little angry. So please if anyone has any ideas, it would be very appreciated.

One more thing, somebody once mentioned to me, something about using the registry editor, now I am not completely in the dark about computers, but that is something I really know nothing about, so if your idea revolves around that, then you may have to explain it just a little bit. Thanks.

What was the date for the drivers you downloaded?

It’s been awhile since I’ve installed video drivers in 98, but can’t you bypass this message and install the drivers you choose?

Don’t F with the registry.

  1. Download the new drivers, unzip them, put them in a side folder on your HD.

  2. Uninstall the current drivers.

  3. Reboot. Do not allow and “plug and play” or auto-detect processes to proceed. You may need to turn off PnP.

  4. Go to Add New Hardware. It should detect the graphics card. BUT, do not let it search for drivers. Click HAVE DISK and/or browse to your HD side folder to find the .INF file for your graphics card.

I’d suggest a slight variation of NBIT33’s list

  1. Set the video driver to VGA and reboot

  2. Allow the PC to come up as VGA then reboot

  3. Install the new video driver.

This way you have one complete cycle of plain old VGA and so you can expect that any extraneous video mode cr*p has been excised.

And welcome to the SDMB.

Further, a better answer would be that if your computer is up to it, you should install Windows XP.
