NWN 2 Mysteries of Westgate is FINALLY here

so after what, a year and a half of Atari dragging it’s DRM laden feet, Mysteries of Westgate is finally being released for download tomorrow the 29th of April.

Every reviewer that has got he’s hands on it has praised it, from PC Gamer to (the now defunct) games for windows, gamespot, and lots of community reviewers.

At the same time it looks like Atari is in talks to bring NWN 2 to steam, so if you don’t have it yet and might be looking for an RPG fix you might want to wait for it to come out on that service.

I’ll definitely be loading this adventure pack tomorrow!

Hey, they’ve just said it’s the 29th of April - they haven’t specified a year.

Seriously, hopefully the extended time this has been off the cards has been enough to iron out some of the inevitable bugs. I’ll be getting it, as long as I can figure out how (and assuming the Euro release date is the same).

This etailer, I believe, caters to Europe: http://www.dlgamer.com/index.php?osCsid=345997e197a950e872e7124828f09cf2

And they say they will have MoW at midnight tonight. They are charging 9 euros though, which is more than the $9.99 american Atari is charging here in the states.

Thanks. I’m in the UK though, so I suspect I shall have to do some searching as far as the exchange rate goes.

What D&D version is it based on, 3.0, 3.5, or 4?

NWN 2 is 3.5.

According to Atari, it’s still “coming soon”

It’s available at Direct 2 Drive as of this morning to north America.

I only got to play for about an hour this morning and man, it’s rocking! I love the two companions I’ve met so far and the docks district is full of personality and ambiance. Unless it takes a drastic turn for the worse soon, I think I’m going to enjoy this one.

Keep me posted. I’ve got all the NWN2 stuff, and I enjoy them all quite a bit. Never did finish Mask of the Betrayer. (Got ticked that I couldn’t walk over and kill a certain Individual… who is totally NOT Lawful Neutral no matter the damned alignment-o-meter says. Tha’ jerk. Plus, felt the gamemakers introduced ideas they werne’t prepared to fully deal with.)

Ok so I’m about 8 hours or so into MoW so far and I have some observations:

First, the atmosphere of Westgate is palpable and immersive, and Sound has a lot to do with that. From the music (and MoW includes a long list of new tracks) to the ambient sound effects (the cheer of the crowd in the arena district, the busy chatter of the market place, the distant screams of yet another poor soul on the Docs who the city has swallowed up) it all just fits into place like pieces of a puzzle. Also contributing is the commentary of the NPC’s on the streets of Westgate, all NPC’s have chatter appropriate to their location and station in life. They move about, stand near shops, some of them even have small background roles to play, such as the performing mage in the market square. Descriptions on curious locales, city statues, items and other objects provide a window into the city’s history. The whole city just feels alive, a stark contrast to Neverwinter in the original campaign which felt like an empty staged up prop.

Quests are never about playing delivery boy. They require various steps to completion, feature different possible endings, and allow the player different ways in which to resolve the plot.

Encounters vary from easy to medium to VERY hard, with most falling in the medium to very hard category. I’ve had to retreat from several encounters so far only returning later after a level up and some better gear becomes available. The most challenging encounters give you clues as to their nature however, so there is usually a way to be prepared and fare better.

The NPC’s have a lot to say to each other and to you as their personality’s clash. These moments where I interact with them and they interact with each other are some of my favorite as they always make me think about how my character is going to react.

Overall I’m loving this DLC so far and I’m already planning another outing with an evil wizard (need to see the evil path) after I’m done with this playthrough.

If you do pick it up, make sure the ONLY thing in your override directory is Tony K’s AI mod. I’ve been pklaying with it and have not encountered any bugs with it so far, but I ehar other mods (specially ones that modify the .2da files) do have issues.

NWN 2 just plays much better with Tony K’s mod. Believe me, you’ll need the improved AI in some of these encounters!

Ok, I beat MoW on my first play through (on the good path) as a swashbuckler/Duelist. It took me about 15 hours, but I did not do all of the side quests, I purposely left some unfinished for my second play through.

And I’m looking forward to that second play through, the evil path seems to be quite different (in terms of the main quest).

This mod is worth the $10 twice over!

I didn’t even know this was in the works. I suppose I should check it out; I’ve already got NWN2 and MotB and their nasty DRM gumming up my machine anyway.

I imagine Westgate would be a compelling locale for a game. It’s certainly more interesting than Baldur’s Gate or Neverwinter, which have hosted 90% of D&D games from the past fifteen years.
