I always thought the “directed” part was the judge directing the jury. Was that a misconception? Or is it just that the legal principle is similar with a bench trial, so the same term is used?
Yes, it could bring the trial to an end after the plaintiff’s case before the defendant has to present their side. Basically saying that the plaintiff has failed to make their case and I can rule before the defendant even goes.
Maybe judgment as a matter of law would be better (I’m not the type of lawyer that goes to court) but I think the judge would understand either way and probably not nitpick.
I expect that it’s similar to mandated reporters. Every adult who works in a school has a legal responsibility to report any evidence of child abuse. Now, it’s highly unlikely that the night janitor would encounter any such evidence… but if he did, he’d be required to report it. Likewise, many employees of a corporation might not have any clue about fraud, but if they ever do, they have to report it. And when you’re the head honcho personally signing off on all of the fraud, well, it’s kind of hard to argue that you didn’t have a clue.
This exactly. Every employee is responsible to report any violations of law or company policy. This was drilled into us in the various trainings.
Heh - ages ago a friend of mine who worked for a regulator was conducting an onsite inspection. The first box of files they opened had a piece of paper on top saying “DO NOT SHOW TO THE REGULATOR”. So that was easy.

Yes, but saying such things under oath in response to a direct question is a different matter.
“Quality” is a largely intangible term, though. Everyone in a company does contribute to quality. “Identifying fraud” is a lot more specific, especially in the context of trying to pin down who was responsible for fraudulent accounting practices.
I feel like a similar question in a pharmacutecals company would be “who is responsible for ensuring that clinical trial data are properly validated?” The answer wouldn’t be “everybody.”
If they’re granted a mistrial on the grounds that the judge was biased against them, then yes, starting over with a new judge might put them in a better position. They might end up with a judge who is more sympathetic.
More important there are tens of millions of people in this country who would believe it, and their votes count the same as rational people’s.

I haven’t read their motion, but I’ve never seen a mistrial result in a change of judge. And I’ve seen a few mistrials in my career. (just a few, it’s rare)
I think what they are forgetting is that there are no judges anywhere who will be sympathetic to the shenanigans they are pulling right now. I doubt there is a judge anywhere who likes having their staff or family threatened. And if the Trump team’s strategy is “you’re not being fair so we’re going to throw tantrums every chance we get” someone should remind them that tantrums don’t win on appeal.
(I’m not sure if it is part of this case or not but I recall there is some aspect of one of Trump’s trials that is going to be appealed to a three-judge panel consisting of two Obama judges and one Biden judge. I can only imagine what those judges are going through already, even having basically zero involvement at this point in time.)
