NYC - A walk through SOHO

I was in New York several years ago and wanted to walk through the famous neighborhoods in Manhattan. I started in Chinatown, up Mulberry thru Little Italy and then over to the West Village, ending up in Washington Square Park. Very enjoyable, but I was slightly disappointed in SOHO… I think I didn’t choose the best route - I remember some dull street of NYU housing for example.

So, I’m asking NY Doper’s to give me the choicest route from Little Italy to the West Village. I’m interested in architecture, cast-iron facades, and the famous shops and galleries. Where are they?

Hope someone can suggest a great route to cover the best of SOHO!

There are lots of small shops, galleries, cafes and the like along Prince & Spring Sts and the avenues that cut across them.

Probably was Bleeker between Broadway & Laguardia.

…which would be the Village rather than SoHo, anyway. And the ickiest part of the Village, to boot. (Except for a nice used bookshop on Mercer Street between Bleecker and Houston, and the Angelika movie theater at the corner of Houston and Broadway.)

So, you’re at the epicenter of Little Italy…the intersection of Grand and Mulberry. Head west on Kenmare and pass the old Police Headquarters, a beautiful domed Beaux-Arts building which is now choped up into condos. Zigzag randomly up and down the north-south streets…Mercer, Greene, Wooster, West Broadway, Thompson, Sullivan…and along the east-west streets…Broome, Spring, Prince.

Whichever route you take, you’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, galleries, and bars to intrigue most tastes.

End up at Sixth Avenue and Houston, and proceed up into the West Village.

…and try not to do it on the weekend. The crush of boulevardiers on a pleasant Saturday afternoon makes the stroll most unpleasant.
