NYC Hotels

Does anyone have a favorite hotel in NYC, tucked away from the madness, priced at $400 or less/night, clean, pleasant neighborhood? I prefer north of Times Square, on the west side of the park. I’m going to a conference at the NY Hilton but I figure I can grab a cab there and back, if I’m not in walking distance. I am not familiar with NYC at all and tend to stay away from the action when I go to large cities, then take the tourist bus or do a walking tour.

OK, for those of you in NYC, swallow whatever you are drinking so you don’t spit on the monitor from laughing so much - I know it’s on the opposite side of where I said I preferred, but is the Waldord Astoria really worth $429 a night? I’ve always wanted to stay there!!!

That would be Waldorf, not Waldord. :smack:

I’ve stayed at The Algonquin a couple times. The rooms are kinda small, but it’s not horrendously expensive[sup]*[/sup] as New York hotels go, and you can’t beat the history. Not quite your prefered location; it’s just a little east of Times Square, on 44th, I think.

  • They’ve done a renovation since last time I was there. The rates may have gone up.

I just spent 5 days at the Alex hotel , it’s at east 45th and Lexington (I know you said west) the service was impeccable and the decor was very snazzy. The restaurant, Riingo’s, has food to die for. Great sushi and good coffee.

To answer your OP, the Waldorf, I’ve heard, is well worth it. I have not myself stayed there but have sent many clients there. It’s a beautiful place that has a very attentive staff.

I can also reccomend the Essex House Hotel . Now, bear in mind, I stayed there a week back when it was a Westin property in 2000. It has changed owners twice since then I think. I haven’t heard any complaints. It overlooks central park and the rooms are gorgeous.

Recently, there has been a stir about BEDBUGs in tony NYC hotels. Supposedly, hotels are mum on this because it is bad forbusiness…and bedbugs are VERY difficult toi get rid of. So was Mick jagger right (“SHATTERED”-“rats on the east side, bedbugs uptown”??

I stayed in HOTEL PENNSYLVANIA.

Reasonable rates, smallish rooms, great location. (7th &33rd) across from Madison Square Gardens and Penn Station. I’d stay there again.

The last time I was there I stayed at the Holiday Inn on W. 57th Street. It was about $160 a night, and the room was large and clean. One block from the subway. One of the hotel rating sites had comments saying one of the towers was not so great. I think you get a good room if you join their frequent stayer program - at least we did. The Holiday Inn site matches the prices of the normal travel sites, by the way.

Only downside - cheap plastic drinking glasses.

And one of the world’s most famous phone numbers.

scratches head

One of the worlds worst websites, at least.

i like the mayflower. central park west.

Pennsylvania 6-5000, one of Glenn Miller’s biggest hits. Lyrics here.

A couple of friends of mine stayed at the Pennsylvania about a year ago, and loved it. Of course it’s neither north of Times Square nor west of the Park, so it may not fit the OP’s needs.

the only website i’ve seen that is more idiotic is the one that I built a few months ago.
