NYC MegaDopefest Weekend -- Jan 16-19 -- Post if and when you'll be here.

Switch me to a “yeah, I’ll be there,” because if I’m not Gingy will kill me.

I’m not “signed up” for any of the special planned activities, though I will be at Blondie’s on Friday night, and America and No Idea on Saturday.

Saturday I’d just kind of like to go with the flow and do whatever happens to take my fancy. I did that last year, but there were like-minded people there. Not sure if this will mean I’ll end up sitting in a weird subway station shivering on a bench and wondering what’s become of my life. Anything’s possible…right?

Yup. Your invasion of Rose’s was how I found out about the SDMB in the first place, which led me down the slippery slope of sin, degradation, and yet another place to spend too much time online reading and occasionally posting.

paperbackwriter, e-mail me and I’ll send you my cellphone number incase you’re coming and running late or anything like that. Otherwise, we should be in front of Red Roof at 11.

Yes yes! Bring Cranium! Sounds like fun!

I think I’ll make it for some of the Saturday activities–all the ones that TruePisces and Verrain make, assumming we can make our hook-up. I think that works out to the Guided Comic/Gaming tour, America’s Diner, and the bar (briefly) afterwards.

Then our job is done.

Cranium is pretty much every big game rolled into one: Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, Playdough, Charades, etc… It’s great, especially if you have me on your team, since I am fantastic at drawing with my eyes closed.

Hey, everyone. Zoltarb and I were wanting to get a preliminary head count on the Brooklyn tour, both for Junior’s (lunch) and for the Transit Museum. We’ll also give some more detailed directions for people to meet us.

To recap the schedule: meet at Junior’s promptly at noon. Meet at museum promptly at 1:45.** Directions for both below. Following the museum, resident historian stuyguy has graciously offered to give us some of the history of Brooklyn and greater New York, before we go over the bridge and see one of the most spectacular views in America.

Top 10 things to know about the Brooklyn tour.

1. You don’t have to do every part of the tour. Please feel free to join us for as much or as little of the tour as you’d like.
2. Please send Oxy a confirming e-mail to OxyMoronNYC@hotmail.com! That way we know to expect you, and Oxy can give you his cell number so if you get lost, you can call him. Also, please include (either in your e-mail or here) whether you’re joining us for Juniors and/or the Museum, for which head counts would be helpful. On the other hand, the bridge should be able to accommodate as many or as few of us as want to go!
3. Please budget about $20 for Juniors. 4. Transit Museum admission is $5. 5. Weather on Saturday: clear and cold. The walk from Junior’s to the Museum is only a few blocks, but do dress warmly.
6. View from Brooklyn Bridge: spectacular. But it will be cold and windy. Must-haves for bridge walk: warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves, and some sort of ear protection.. The OxyBF suggested a cheap poncho might also help for wind.
7. Junior’s is notorious for enormous portions. So even though it may seem a little pricey for a sandwich, you’re getting about two meals’ worth. Feel free to take doggy bags.
8. Junior’s is located in downtown Brooklyn at the corner of Flatbush and Dekalb Avenues - right on top of the Dekalb M/N/Q/R stop. It’s also one block from the Nevins 2/3/4/5 stop at the corner of Flatbush & Fulton. Allow 45 minutes from Manhattan, unless you’re below 14th Street.
**9. The museum is at Schermerhorn & Boerum, a/k/a Brooklyn Bridge Blvd. ** It’s equally close to the Jay Street A/C/F, Borough Hall 2/3/4/5, and Court Street M/N/R stops. Again, allow 45 minutes from Manhattan.
**10. Our pre-bridge walk will go through a bit of Brooklyn Heights. **
Conveniently, it takes us by a couple of subway stops for those who [strike]wuss out[/strike] seek warmer activities.

The following folks have indicated at least some interest in joining the
tour: Zoltarb, Oxy, Stuyguy, Billdo, OxyBF, Biggirl, Houseman(?), Euty(?), Geobabe, UncleBill, Lisabethnyc, FriendBill(?), HelenWheels(?), RTFirefly (museum only?), AnitaVacation, Mehitabel.

We’ve had one dropout: Scott Evil.

Sorry. Not that I wouldn’t love to join you, but I’m seeing a show that afternoon…

I’m in! I’m not sure how many of the events, but at the very least, I’m in for Saturday Night!

We’re looking at 16-20 degrees on Saturday, unknown on Sunday.

Anyone doing anything monday? MLK day, you know. (And frankly, being with Dopers sounds like a good way to celebrate his Dream.)

Hey guys! So sorry it’s taken me so long to post details about Sunday’s Central Park excursion… I’ve been trying since Monday, but, between the boards being down and taking a business trip and my cable modem being out, I’ve been thwarted at every turn! Blah blah blah… anyway…

The plan is actually very flexible, depending on what time people want to get up, how much they want to walk, etc. Also, I’m copying a page from Oxy’s book and giving you several different times/places to meet up.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

11:30 Meet in front of Zabar’s (80th and Broadway)
It’s not technically part of Central Park, but, it’s relatively closeby and a New York institution worth visiting. Plus, you’ll need to start the day with food, right?

(I’ve planned a gap between stop 1 and stop 2 because, if people are interested, this is where we can take some time to walk. I think from Zabar’s to the Arch should be about 1 1/2 to 2 miles. We could also take a bus through the park and just walk down to 67th [about 3/4 of a mile]. Or two buses with very little walking. We can play it by ear and decide Sunday; you may want to come prepared with a metro card or $2 in change for the bus in case we go that way

Along the way, depending on how much we walk, we can see, among other things, Strawberry Fields, Bethesda Terrace, Belvedere Castle, the duck pond, the Hans Christan Anderson Statue, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, the literary Walk and the Balto statue.)

1:30 Meet at the Willowdell Arch, inside the park near the Balto statue around east 67th Street
Stuyguy will be giving us some info about the construction of the park in general, and Andrew Green’s role as park builder and NYC master planner in particular.
2:30 At this point, we have a few different options and I’m not sure what people want most (we can do one of these things, two of them, whatever):

The Nature Center and Children’s Zoo, we could meet in front of the Arsenal at 64th Street. Admission is $6 for adults.

Ice skating at Wollman Rink. Admission is $11 + $4.75 skate rental.

Touch football at Sheep’s Meadow. Admission is free, but, you may pay with pain.

More walking… we can walk by the skating rink and watch skaters, go to the Carousel, do some more wandering. We can even leave the park and hit the stores on 5th Avenue.

Please let me know if you’re planning on meeting up at one of these points Sunday and what you’d like to do at 2:30. If there are things on the list nobody is interested in, I’ll drop them… conversely, if you’d really like to do something that isn’t here, please let me know. I want to do what you guys want to do. You can email me at lisabethnyc@yahoo.com. Please send me your cell phone number if you have one and I’ll send you mine back.

Looking forward to seeing some of you!

Alas, I probably won’t be making it this year, after all. I have a long weekend (yay!) and will be fleeing the city on Fri. afternoon.

I will hold out for a warmer weather gathering.

Have fun!

Well, the <pit words deleted> security review and prep has been going better than expected, so I MAY be able to make Friday. If they don’t bring in the cadaver dogs, to see where the bodies is hid. Call it a game-day decision.

Unfortunately, while everyone else is on a long weekend, I will still have to be in early Sun/Mon, so the rest looks out. Too bad, Ace sounds interesting…

FYI, Billdo and whomever else is keeping track of things: I just got off the phone with Zappo, (sadillac in LJ), and he will NOT be in attendance this weekend. He’s dog-sick. Got bacterial gastroenteritis, and a sinus infection to boot.

I, for one, am tremendously bummed. If you haven’t met Zappo yet, put him on your list of people you need to meet before you die. :frowning:

Ok, I’m definitely in, Friday and Sat only… I’ll be leaving on Sunday late morning.

So, I will be at Blondie’s on Friday, and America on Saturday night.
As far as Saturday day plans, I’m torn between gaming stores and the transit museum. I’ll let the appropriate people know in time though.

Woohoo! I am all of a sudden very psyched.

I made a post that seems to have not gone through… :frowning:

Here goes again:

Nametags are handy at these sorts of things, but they are also tacky (no pun intended) and rather annoying. I have a button press and was thinking it could be cool to make nametag buttons for anyone who wanted one. Format wise I was thinking

Name
"screenname"

And then if you wanted some sort of graphic in addition that would be possible as well. (Like I might put a cat on mine.)

So if you would like one, please send me email to opalcat@fathom.org Critically Important Detail: with the subject “SDMB NYC NAMETAG” --exactly like that, so that my email filters will grab it and it won’t get deleted.

Include this info:

• First name, or what you want us to call you
• SDMB screenname
• Button color
• Text color
• any graphic or theme you want (provide an image for me or describe what you need. Google’s image search is very handy for this sort of thing, btw.)

You have until about 5pm tomorrow (Thursday) to get this info to me.

OK! Train ticket booked. I’ll be getting in on Friday evening while Blondie’s is under way, and leaving early Monday morning. As mentioned I’ll be doing the Brooklyn tour and the Ellis Island visit in addition to the everybody activities. Not sure for Ethnic Cuisine Night though.

BTW, I really wish they would call it something different - I’m having a hell of a time figuring out what to tell the border guards sweatdrop

No Sal this year? Man, that sucks.

Also, Am, I don’t suppose you’d be able to e-mail me you cell as well just in case? I think I may have had it, but that was a year ago.

GeoBill, A_V is in PA doing a funeral, and what with the weather, she’s going to be taking it easy. Though we have no actual change of plans yet, it may happen. If I think we’ll be late to the airport (which I’m still getting directions to) I’ll gfive a call to let you know. As it stands, take it easy and expect us at 3-ish.

See y’all tomorrow!!!

Aaaaaaallrighty then. Bags are almost packed, work is almost done. I’ll be here tonight until it is. I’ll be on a plane bright and early in the morning and into NYC by noon. A little freshen up and I’ll be out on the streets. I am really excited!!

Things here at work have been crazy since year end, so I am really looking forward to a few days off. See ya all tomorrow!!
