NYC MegaDopefest Schedule – Jan. 2-5, 2003 – Please check in

The NYC MegaDopefest Planning Committee is pleased to announce the final (as of now) schedule for the MegaDopefest. For all those planning to attend (or who are listed as attending but will not), please post in this thread confirming that you will be there (or won’t or are still not sure). Also, please mention whether you plan to come to the Thursday Korean Dinner and/or the Billdo Bagel Brunch so that we may make reservations and send directions.

Also, in order to keep this thread to a manageable length, we would appreciate it if you could keep posts in this thread to comments and questions about the Dopefest, the attendees, and arrangements. Also, we will be posting additional details about events, parking, transportation lodging and other items of interest. If you want to start a pre-Dopefest flirting or woo-hoo I’m going to New York thread, for pre-Dopefest chatter, feel free.

Thursday, January 2: The Pre-Dopefest Korean Dinner

For those in the City a bit early, we will be having dinner at Kum Gang San, 49 West 32nd Street., just east of Sixth Ave. at 7:00 p.m. 1/2/3/9, to 34th St/Penn Sta, B/D/F/V or N/R/Q/W to 34th St Herald Square.

Please post if you plan to attend so we can make reservations.

Friday, January 3: The Welcome to Dopefest Gathering

After an extensive search, we have identified a Friday Night base of operations. From 7:00 p.m. until at least 11ish, we will have New York dopers there to greet all visitors at The Bleecker Street Bar, 58 Bleecker Street, between Broadway & Lafayette Street. 4/5/6 to Bleecker Street, F/V to Broadway/Lafayette, N/R to Prince St. The Bleecker Street Bar is handicapped accessible, with a no-step entrance in the back. Dopers under 21 planning to attend, please e-mail me. We should have a sign saying “Friends of Cecil A.” or something to that effect.

Around the Bleecker Street Bar are tons of places to eat and other forms of entertainment. We may be sponsoring a group to go dancing later in the evening. Details to follow.

Saturday, January 4: Daytime Cultural Events

During the day on Saturday, January 4, we will be sponsoring three cultural events for dopers:

[ul][li]Dim Sum Lunch in Chinatown and an Art of the New York City Subways tour.[/li][li]The American Museum of Natural History.[/li][li]The Children’s Museum of Manhattan[/li][/ul]
For each of the events, we now plan to meet up at around 1:00 p.m. (subject to change) at locations to be announced. Details of each event will follow.

Saturday, January 4: The MegaDopefest Dinner

The MegaDopefest Dinner will return to America Restaurant on Saturday, January 4, 2003 at 6:30 p.m.

America, 9 East 18th Street
New York, NY 10003, (212) 505-2110. 18th Street between Broadway and Fifth. 4/5/6, N/R/Q/W or L trains to 14th Street/Union Square.
[Official link with menus](http://www.arkrestaurants.com/section_home.cfm?section_id=1&location_id=1&restauran t_id=1)
Reservation for “Cecil Adams” party. According to the restaurant, it is handicapped accessible.

Following the Dinner, we will adjourn around the corner to the No Idea Bar. 30 East 20th Street between Park and Broadway, Official Link, where we have the back room reserved. No Idea is handicapped accessible. Dopers under 21 planning to attend, please e-mail me.

Sunday, January 5: Billdo’s Bagel Brunch

On Sunday, January 5, from 11:00 to 2:00, we will see how many people we can stuff into a one-bedroom apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at Billdo’s Bagel Brunch. There will be bagels with all the trimmings and plentiful coffee and juice. My apartment is hung-over accessible (and we can get a ramp for the few steps in the lobby, if necessary). If you’re planning to attend, please post here so I may send you directions and have sufficient food. (If your e-mail isn’t listed, please e-mail me.)

Travel Arrangements:

For those flying in, we recommend you use LaGuardia, Kennedy or Newark airports. Airport information, including ground and public transportation options, is available here.

Intercity rail service is available through Amtrak to New York’s Penn Station. Commuter rail service is available through Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North and New Jersey Transit. Bus service is available to the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

People have mentioned they’re staying at the Hotel Olcott, 27 West 72nd Street, (212) 877-4200; Hotel Wolcott, 4 West 31st Street, (212) 268-2900; and Red Roof Inn Manhattan, 6 West 32nd Street, (212) 643-7100.

Once in the City, you can get around by New York City Transit buses and subways.

Folks, please remember that is New York City, with big city prices here. If you come into the City with just a few bucks in your wallet, it won’t stretch far, much less through a whole weekend. Also, we have an 8-1/4% sales tax and tipping is an important additional cost on the price of food and drinks here. America will include a 18% gratuity on the bill, and that’s about the standard percentage tip here. We’ve had problems with some that didn’t realize this before, and we don’t want to have similar problems this year.

Driving directions and parking information will be provided soon.

I will be flying in early Friday afternoon and will depart Sunday, after partaking of good company and bagels at your place, Billdo.

Happy Holidays!

Yes, I am an affirmative, and I am also going to be a guest in the House of Pain. I will probably be at brunch on Sunday, assuming the rest of the MarVa carpool is willing.

And w00t…!!!

Locked in granite are GeoBill. Arriving Friday late afternoon. Doing the Museum of Natural History Saturday, FWIW. Two seats (or one to hold us both) please, at the Bagel Brunch. Departing with tears in our eyes Sunday evening.

I will be at:
Friday night welcome to the dopefest at Bleecker Street
Saturday day subway tour
Saturday night dinner at America
Saturday night lunacy at No Idea

I will not be at:
Thursday night dinner
Bagel brunch

Thanks Billdo, for all the work you do to keep us organized!

Verrain and I will be coming in Friday night, but won’t be joining any of the Dopers until Saturday. Count us both in for the Bagel Brunch (and maybe there’ll be a corner we can stuff some luggage in, since check out of the hotel will be while we’re at your place.)

We’ve talked about the possibility of a Dim Sum lunch Saturday for anyone that wants to join us. I was thinking the place we went back in March? (Who’s name is escaping me at the moment…) Also, if someone in the area that’s interested in joining us could make the reservations, it would be mucho appreciated. Otherwise, I’ll just need a name, and a number of people coming so I can call myself during my week of boredom next week at work.

Can’t wait to see you all there!

Fizzy and I are most willing to be at the brunch:D

Are there currently any plans to see things like Central Park? Fizzy says “I’m not [just] going to NYC to see dopers!”

Oh. Bill, email sent.

How on earth did I miss the fact that the Dim Sim lunch was already up there. Ignore me. Please. :o

I will be arriving Thursday & staying with you, **Billdo, ** on Thursday night. I will be at the Thursday night dinner, the Friday night dinner, the Saturday night dinner, and the Bagel Brunch.

my Goddess I am SO GEEKED!!!

I’ll be coming up Friday, and headed back on Sunday, after the Bagel Brunch, which I wouldn’t dream of missing. Staying Friday and Saturday nights at the Red Roof Inn. I’ll be attending the dinner Saturday night, and I’ll be at the bar on Firday and up for subsequent wanderings. Dim sum on Saturday sounds like it has potential, too.

Billdo, as I belatedly posted in the other thread, I’m now a definite to attend. Much as I’d like to have a good Korean dinner, my work schedule won’t permit me to arrive until some time Friday. However, count me in at Bleecker Street, America/No Idea, and your brunch. And thanks to all who laid the organizational groundwork. Let me know if I can assist upon my arrival.

I’m in for Thursday dinner.

Both Sua and I are in for drinks on Friday, dim sum on Saturday afternoon, dinner and drinks on Saturday night, and Sunday brunch.

Thanks for all your hard work, Bill!

I’ll be at the Korean dinner Thursday (and sleeping on your floor that night, Bill).

I will be at the dinner on Saturday and joining the revelry at the bar afterwards.

I will not be there Friday, nor Sunday morning.

That is etched in stone.

I’ll email you Monday, 12/23, to iron out the details of Thursday early P.M.

And thanks again. Your hospitality is making this so much easier for me in so many ways. I owe you large, my man.

I will be arriving at some point on Friday, attending all events, and leaving Sunday.

I’m very excited for this, see you all soon!

Oh, also, I will be bringing andygirl and scott evil, but I’ll let them confirm themselves.

Sure, I haven’t been posting recently (moved out of my parents’ house finally and don’t have internet access, though I’m looking into getting a cable modem), but I still plan on attending. I think I can manage a place to stay on my own, and have already requested Jan. 3rd off of work, so I should be all good to go.

I shall be arriving Saturday, staying at the Red Roof Inn, and leaving after the Billdo Baked and Boiled Bagel Bacchanal Brunch.

I’d love to join youse guyses for dim sum on Saturday as well; could you please email me with times and suchlike once the plans are firmed up? I’ll be driving in from Pennsyltucky and will probably have to head straight to dim sum before checking into the hotel. My email’s in my profile.

Oh yeah, I’ll be at the festivities on Saturday night.

Serious question; would I be insane to try to attempt to find parking around your place on Sunday, Billdo? If there’s a chance of shoehorning the Taurus o’ Doom into a space somewhere around your place, I can check out of the hotel, head to your place, and then head home afterwards.

I will be there, but New & Improved Scott will not :frowning:

I am a go for the Saturday events, possibly the Sunday ones (depending on when my van is leaving!)

Disclaimer: Whether or not I can attend depends completely upon whether or not my managers give me the weekend off, as I’ve requested.

If I go:

I will arrive on Saturday via train. If bouv’s plan is to arrive Saturday, then we may be arriving together; otherwise, I’ll just drive to Poughkeepsie in the morning, park my truck in the train station’s paid parking, and take the Metro North commuter train in to the city, hopefully for arrival around noontime. I would like to visit the Museum of Natural History in the afternoon. I would then be present for Saturday night dinner.

What time is dinner expected to run until? I may spend the night, although I haven’t a hotel room (space has been offered to me on someone else’s room’s floor). However, my age (Sunday of the Dopefest is my 20th birthday) may become an impediment to the post-prandiary festivities. If dinner shan’t be overly late in ending, I could, I suppose, take the Metro North back to Poughkeepsie and get home by morning.

I would like to warn everyone at the gathering that, although I am a native of New York State, I am a farm girl. I will be astounded at the large buildings and take many photos of same. I have no idea how public transportation works, as my town is too small to have anything of the sort. I will probably get lost if I am expected to go anywhere by myself. If anyone could have the heart to meet me at the train station (my arrival time will be decided on and posted as soon as I find out my work schedule, which will tell me whether or not I’m going at all), I would be extremely grateful and much less likely to die.

That’s the other thing. There is a general perception around here that NYC is a HORRIBLE DANGEROUS PLACE, and therefore I am BOUND to get robbed/killed/both if I spend more than an hour there. Please tell me this isn’t true?

I was a green boy of 20 this past year in NYC and I was perfectly safe. I took the subway, I saw the river (er, some river … I think Pucette said it separated NY from NJ), I did not suffer any bodily harm (unless you count what the goat at Billdo’s did … or was that a goat? My memory of that 5 AM jaunt is rather shaky).

Plus, if there were any danger of things happening to you, there would be same danger to fizzy, who I am bringing. So nothing bad is allowed to happen to you;)

I will be at:

  • Bleecker Street Bar (if I weren’t, Billdo and delphica might well tar and feather me!)

  • America

  • No Idea Bar

I will not be at:

Thursday night Korean dinner

Sunday Bagel Brunch Bonanza

And to be honest, I dunno if I’ll make the Cultural Events or not. Depends how my Friday night is.
