NYC MegaDopefest Weekend -- Jan 16-19 -- Post if and when you'll be here.

NEW YORK CITY MEGADOPEFEST WEEKEND IV – JANUARY 16-19, 2004

Ladies and Gentlemen, this thread is for you to post if and when you will be coming to the NYC Megadopefest Weekend (even if you’d posted you’d be coming before). Please post if you will attend and the time period you expect to be here for, so we may make proper plans and reservations. We know plans will change, so we won’t hold you to these, but it’s helpful to know who’s initially planning to be where.

The schedule of events (subject, as always, to change) is:

Friday, January 16 (evening): Welcome gathering at Blondies, 212 W 79th St (bet. Bway & Amsterdam), 1/9 to 79th or B/C to 81st. We’ll have the back room of this sports bar known for its chicken wings (menu).

Saturday, January 17 (day): Three options:
Lunch at Greek Taverna in Astoria & Museum of Modern Art in Queens (delphica)
Junior’s in Brooklyn, The New York Transit Museum, and a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (OxyMoron & Zoltarb)
Tour of New York Gaming and Comic Stores (TruePisces)
We’ll give you places to meet soon, and we expect that people will meet at noon-ish.

Saturday, January 17 (evening): The MegaDopefest Dinner at America restaurant, 9 East 18th Street (bet. Fifth & Bway), 4/5/6/N/R/Q/W/L to 14th St.-Union Square. Dinner will be followed by post-Dopefest drinks at No Idea, 30 East 20th Street (bet. Bway & Park).

Sunday, January 18 (day): Three options:
Ellis Island museum (Billdo)
Central Park Zoo & Carousel, Skating at Wollman Rink & Fifth Avenue shops (sponsor TBA)
I’m planning to meet for Ellis Island at around 11:00. The other is to be determined.

Sunday, January 18 (evening): Ethnic food night – dinner at some interesting ethnic restaurants of New York. 6:30 p.m. Chinese in Chinatown (possibly with dessert in Little Italy), Indian on 6th Street, Brazilian in the West Village, Belgian in Chelsea. We’ll all meet up after dinner at a bar to be determined.

Monday, January 19 (day): Billdo’s Bagel Brunch. Bagels and Lox on the Upper West Side. 11:00 to 2:00

We’ll be filling in more details of the schedule as the date grows nearer. As always, we’d be pleased to have you come to as many or as few of the events as you wish. Although the main Dopefest dinner is our centerpiece, many people particularly enjoy the smaller smaller group events. If you want to break off individually and see other New York sights, we’d be happy to give advice as well.

You can’t get around the fact that New York is an expensive place to visit. We try to keep most of our events on the reasonable side (many are downright cheap by New York standards), and we will link to menus, price lists and the like when we can. However, please plan and budget for the trip appropriately.

For those planning their travel, we recommend that people fly into LaGuardia, Newark or J.F.K. airports. There is good public transportation from each into the City, and if there is a significant price difference in flights, you should probably pick the cheapest (and if they’re about the same, pick LaGuardia). Other airports in the region (e.g. Islip) are difficult and expensive to get to and from, and not recommended. Reasonably priced hotels that people have stayed at include: Hotel Olcott, Hotel Wolcott (not to be confused with the Olcott) and the Red Roof Inn Manhattan, and the Hotel Pennsylvania (yes, its phone number is Pennsylvania 6-5000). Free on street parking is available in parts of the City (including the Upper West Side where the Olcott is located), but it can take a long while to find a space, and you have to be very careful in reading the often confusing street signs to avoid a ticket.

Most events are at wheelchair-accessible locations. Please post or e-mail if you have special needs so we can fully accommodate you.

The following Dopers are all currently considered maybes: Acrylic Vessel, andygirl, Annie-Xmas, av8rmike, Banger, Barbarian, Biggirl, Billdo, bouv, bristlesage, Casey105, cherry, CuriousCanuck, Cosmopolitan, DaisyFace, DAVEW0071 (& Mrs. Dave-Guy), delphica, DynoSaur, E-Sabbath, Eonwe, Eve, Geobabe, GingerOfTheNorth, Gorgon Heap, Hamadryad, Jack Batty, Jane D’oh, jeremy evil, jinwicked, JohnBckWLD, imthjckaz, KidCharlemagne, kyla, LolaCocaCola, lurkernomore, mala, olentzero, OpalCat, OxyMoron, Maeglin, manhattan, MannyL, matt_mcl, Mehitabel, Miss Creant, Moe, Mr. Cynical, Persephone, primesite, pravnik pseudotriton ruber ruber, Ringo, rocking chair, RTFirefly, Sakura, saramamlana, scott evil, Skerri (& boyfriend), Spit, sunfish, TruePisces, tkeana, UncleBill, Verrain, vix, Weirddave, whatmove, Winterwren, Zappo, Zoltarb,

Can’t wait to see you in New York in January.

I’ll be here from the 16th through the 19th.

I’ll be staying at the Wolcott.

I’ll be there for dinner and drinks on the 17th.

(if this doubleposts, i will scream. okay, maybe not really. but still…)

my boyfriend & i will be flying back from puerto rico a few days beforehand, so it’s possible that i could swing by for a little bit. i either know or know-of a decent smattering of you, so i could see myself popping up at one of the nighttime events (bars can be fun & low-key). plop me down into the maybe-pile, but i won’t be showing up at any of the daytime festivities.

Eutychus and I are definites. We’ll be getting there Friday afternoon, and we’re staying at the Hotel Pennsylvania. We’ll be there through Monday afternoon.

We’ll be at the dinners in the evenings, and the Brunch (for a while, anyway–my flight leaves LaGuardia at 2:10). Still undecided on the daily stuff, though–I think that’s just because we keep forgetting to actually talk about it. But I know Euty wants to see Rockefeller Center, and either the Transit Museum, Ellis Island, or both.

Me, I’m just gonna be lookin’ for some sushi.

Me! Zoltarb! Houseman for the dinner for sure if he doesn’t have to work! And probably other things too! Pain will not commit! She’s got a full social schedule! She’ll see if she can fit us in!

I’m excited! Can you tell?!

UncleBill and I are in the “definites” column. We arrive on Friday early afternoon and will be departing, sadly, on Sunday, since Bill won’t have Monday off. We’re in for the Transit Museum/Brooklyn Bridge outing and Saturday dinner

We’ll be sharing a room at the Red Roof with Gorgon Heap and Acrylic Vessel–woo! parTAY!–so you can mark them down as attending as well.

Hi Bill! I am a yes for:

Friday at Blondies
Saturday at MOMA (obviously). If there is still interest in this, I’ll work on the details and post them soon.
Saturday night at America and No Idea

I have previous commitments for Sunday and Monday.

I’m so looking forward to seeing all you out-of-towners!

Hiya Bill! Weirddave and I will be there on Friday until Monday morning, as of now. This may change later. We’ll be staying on W 45 betweet 8&9.

We’ll be around for Blondie’s, America, and your brunch; we haven’t decided yet for daytime activities.

I’m definitely in for the Saturday evening festivities. The rest of the itinerary depends on what the Woo family is doing, as I will be their guest that weekend.

I’ll be there for the whole dang thing… won’t be able to get rid of me… (except for Monday brunch… I’ll be working. :()

I’m on for the nighttime activities and Brooklyn on Saturday. Just commented on LJ that I could head up the Central Park excursion on Sunday if you still need someone.

I’ll be there for the duration! Since bucks are really scarce, I’m thinking of sharing a room with Birdgirl at Hotel 31 which is near the Wolcott and Red Roof. If anyone has some first-hand knowledge about Hotel 31, please let me know.

My interests probably match the Geobills, so ditto what she said above.

I’m a definite, Friday through Monday.

I’m staying with Maeglin on like 3,000th St on the West Side of Manhattan.

Ex-birdgirl here…yes I have decided to go up with Anita Vacation…(thanks for talking me into it!) We’ll let you know sonn everything we’ll be doing, but at this point we’ll be there Friday night for the first event, and Saturday and Sunday.

I’ll be there for as long as Eonwe is there. (Thanks again for lettin’ me hitch a ride, you rock the block, my man!)

I’ll probably go do the gaming and comic book store thing. Hmmm…now to find a place to stay…hadn’t thought of that…parks still come with benches in them, right?

I’ll be there for some or all the festivities.

If you need someone to head up a NYC history excursion, I’m your man. (With ever so little prodding, I can be convinced to give my Andrew Haswell Green song&dance – in Central Park or wherever.)

Bill, Eve is on both lists in your OP. (I always figured her for a two-face!)

I’ll be driving down Friday with CuriousCanuck, his non-Doper girlfriend, and I think LaurAnge (who’s not on the list!). Staying at Maeglin’s House of Pain®, unless he’s changed his mind. (Although I believe CC and girlfriend will be staying in a hotel… wink wink, nudge nudge.)

jeremy evil won’t be coming, so you can take him off the list. He’s got school.

Saturday afternoon I’ll be doing Oxy’s activity. And who knows what else.

AFAIK we’ll be leaving Sunday, as we don’t have a long weekend up here, so no bagel brunch this year.

Unfortunately, I won’t make it again this year. . .

. . . but I will provide a book and writing material to anyone who wants to take up the title of "2004 NYC Note Nazi ".

Tripler
Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

I’ll be there for the 17th, and would like to take part in OxyMoron’s and Zoltarb’s activities. Getting a bus in to probably Port Authority, so I’ll need directions from there. I can come to dinner and have a few rounds at the bar afterwards. I think the last bus leaves NYC at 12:30 AM.

SuaSponte and I will be arriving lateish Friday night and leaving Sunday evening. We’ll be at dinner and drinks on Saturday. Attendance at other events TBD. Lodgings TBD.
