The Scheduling Begins: NYC MegaDopefest III -- January 3-5, 2003

For those of you who have marked your calendars (and even those who haven’t):

The centerpiece of NYC MegaDopefest III Weekend has been scheduled

Due to popular demand, the MegaDopefest Dinner will return to America Restaurant on Saturday, January 4, 2003 at 6:30 p.m.

America
9 East 18th Street
New York, NY 10003
(212) 505-2110
Official link with menu
Reservation for “Cecil Adams” party.

According to the restaurant, it is handicapped accessable.

We hope to shortly finalize our after-dinner plans for Saturday evening. Also in the works are a range of activities for Saturday afternoon, possibly including cultural attractions, ice skating, shopping, and activities for the stroller set.

Friday night we will have a casual get-together, most likely in a bar/restaurant. And, on Sunday will be Billdo’s Bagel Brunch, though with the size of the crowd, we may have to find a venue other than my apartment.

At this point we have 51 people scheduled to attend (including both folks who signed up on the “Mark Your Calendars” thread and New York Dopefest Committee Members who didn’t but damn well better show up), and 29 who said they might be able to:

Hmm… nice, varied menu. Reasonable, I thought at first, until I realized it was in American dollars. But I’m saving up for this anyway…

I believe Hastur will be driving down from Montreal with matt_mcl, as he’ll be visiting our fair city over Christmas.

And I re-stake my claim on the floor of Maeglin’s House of Pain®.

I’m buying my plane tickets tomorrow  It’s offically an International Dopefest. I’ll be staying from the 2nd - 9th at Maeglin’s place, so it’s a proper holiday for me.

So you mean I’m going to America, to eat at America? Wicked. I’m going to be on a limited budget so I’m relying on my English accent enticing a few people to buy the furriner a drink

Note to self: buy new tiara; old one broke at some point at PoutineDope.

Ahem: WOOOooooo!

[To the tune of Jungle Fever]

we’s gonna break one hundred, we’re gonna break one hundred, we’s gonna break one hundred, cuz we got love!

I shall sit with Francesca and speak in a British accent and entice many furriners to buy us drinks. We’re just that cute.

Put me somewhere between pencil and ink. I’ve fully intended on attending for some time now, but I’m starting to think that my post Christmas finances might not allow it.

Anyone who’s willing to share a room can email me. Rates were relatively reasonable at The New Yorker last year, which is right across the street from Penn Station, so it’s centrally located to pretty much everything.

Yep, Aaron and I are in. I checked the menu for the restaurant, and I’m alternating between charmed and alarmed at the notion of a restaurant that serves fluffernutter sammiches.

Robin

Put me down in ink, please. This is just too hard to resist.

Sigh…English accents. I’ll buy you at least one drink, Fran. I suspect I won’t be the only one, though.

And (naturally) that goes for you too, Ginger.

Bill, once again, your planning and list are incredible.

Fran, the irony is not lost on us … trust me.

Ginger, that reminds me of an amusing story … when Acryllic Vessel and I were on our honeymoon in Toronto, we stopped one night in this wonderful little basement bar where there was a great jazz band and singer on stage. Well, many beers and martinis into the night I went up to the bar and some guy started a conversation with me for no reason, so I started up this Englishy accent and convinced him I was from Leeds. I found it hysterical because I used more of a London-esque accent while doing it.

Well, that’s enough of my sillyness for now.

Oh, yeah. My only two requirements while in NYC are an honest-to-God Jewish deli (I live outside the pale and am dying for a good corned-beef sandwich) and a good Italian restaurant.

Robin

Pencil me in.

For anyone who’s going to be here on the evening of the 2nd, there appear to be several good Korean restaurants extremely close to my hotel, so I’m going. I’d love to have company. I’m leaning toward Gam Mee Ok (they got a 23 food rating in the latest Zagat), but there are lots around. Anyone want to join me? I haven’t had Korean food since I left Houston (at least that I didn’t prepare myself), and it’s too yummy to pass up.

The food at America is pretty good. I ate dinner there after my law school graduation. Good food, laid back, and some neat looking statues.

Robin, I think a blind person could find both of those in NYC.

I remember the Italian restaurant where Mrs. F. and I ate lobster ravioli this August. It was a religious experience. I’m game for another trip back to that particular mountaintop.

I believe we shall be there.

We have to go back to the Grassroots

I’d like to share a hotel room with somebody (i’ll take the bathtub; Ginger has graciously offered me a spot in hers, for which I am grateful), and getting down there poses a problem for me - I don’t really want to drive. At all. I could take a commuter train, I suppose, but who’d pick me up and ferry me around? My only other option is to convince my best friend and her roommate, who is from Queens, to go to the City that weekend and take me with them.

I’d like to visit Chinatown, see the pretty buildings (taking lots of architectural-detail photos while I’m at it), and maybe take in a museum if I’ve time. I’d also like to have all my fears disproved. It’s amazing the preconceptions we have about The City up here, even being just a couple hours away. (“You’ll be shot IMMEDIATELY!”)

Let’s play bum points!!!

I’m very psyched for this! scott evil, do you need a ride down/up with me?

I know I’m bringing andygirl and LaurAnge… maybe scott.

I also may be going down early (I have yet to talk to my passengers, but we’ll see).

And, so folks know, even with scott evil I’ve got room for one more in my car, I’ll be leaving from Burlington VT, but can get anyone from the general area, or if anyone wanted to just get to my place the night before, the seat’s available.
