NYTimes crossword clue of the month

One born near the Butt of Lewis. 4 letters

Good luck!

Lieu?

Scot?

Sunspace beat me to it. :frowning:

Sunspace, I haven’t bothered with the puzzle except to look at that first clue. But as I scan it now, “Scot” looks suspiciously right! How to go!

NurseCarmen, please tell me why you suggest “Lieu.” I can’t figure it out.

I’ll email the puzzle to you, if you like.

And you, too, NurseCarmen

It’s a reference to Doper lieu, I assume – he of the poop threads.

And, no, I wouldn’t have gotten the answer.

LOL! Belated thanks to NurseCarmen for a good laugh!!

Rats. I was gonna guess Manx…

Darnit, it’s not a good joke if it needed to be explained.

If it helps, my second guess was going to be Ethilrist.

Hmmm…

Dean - as in Dean Martin?

no…

Lambchop - too many letters…

Gary - as in Gary Coleman?

na…

Huey?

no

uh, how about Carl?

Sinclair, too many letters.
Nope. I got squat.

I have actually been to the Butt of Lewis, back in 85. And very nice it was too. There’s a great big lighthouse there which also incorporates an effing loud foghorn.

What - you thought it wasn’t a real place?

Oh no, I’ve heard of it. I think it’s near the Isles of Langerhans.

I was gonna guess Juliette Lewis’ first child, only s/he hasn’t been born yet.

The Lonely Planet guidebook to Scotland in my local public library is subtitled “From Cockburnspath to the Butt of Lewis” which makes me think that someone was trying to push their editor’s buttons and it somehow got through unchallenged (I haven’t noticed such risque subtitles for other Lonely Planet books).

The latest edition lacks this subtitle, but amazon.de lists the version (2002, I think) that’s in my local library.
